A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
8 Sun. Larson’s radio woke us up at 9. Had the work all done when Keith came before 11. Started to go home but it was drifting badly, so came back & cooked a nice dinner. Lay around this aft, then went to Church, which was a grand service, then to Lucille & Archies. Is. came after the Young Peoples Meeting. We had a lovely time a grand lunch. The kids have a real nice suite. Keith stayed here quite late.
9 Mon. Keith brought me home at noon & I got dinner while he went back & pulled Gordon’s car. He took me back to work. Marge & Doris Williamson went to the first show with we three. “Sister Kenny” with Rosalind Russell. Really grand. We came back to the room & I set my hair & then we went to the rink. Keith curled. We watched. I was terribly cold & terribly tired. They lost.
10 Tues. I was pretty sleepy today. Isabelle came home at noon & cooked a good dinner. We took her back to school. Keith had supper at Marg’s & curled at 6.30. We went up at 7.45. What a game! Duffy & scads of other men were razzing me. It was one Colgate rink against the other, but we won & was I thrilled. Sure had fun though. I stayed til the end, then Keith went to the end of the C.C.Y.M. with me. Had a lovely lunch & I played the piano a little. Keith left at 12.
11 Wed. Ah! Love is wonderful. Keith picked me up at noon, we went for Marg & Gord at rink, & took them home, then we came. I made dinner & while he pulled Gord’s car, did dishes, then didn’t do another thing all afternoon, but be with him. I love him terribly much. He phoned the rink & they said he didn’t go on until 6.30, but Gord phoned later & he had to go right up at 5.45, so we waited supper til 7. They lost. We wasted time deciding what to do, then drove out home, but drifting terribly. Hurried back into town. Bed late.
12 Thurs. Keith brought me up & we had lunch at noon. They lost their curling game so are out now, but Turners rink asked him to curl with them. He went to a banquet, so we were alone for supper. He had Gord phone & tell me that He wouldn’t be here until 9.30, the darling. I lay down & slept for an hour & he awakened me with a kiss. I felt much better, and he stayed until about one. We are very much in love.
13 Fri. Felt pretty miserable all day. Keith & I were up here for lunch. It is grand having him around, riding back & forth to work. I didn’t feel like watching the curling, so Keith & I went to the show at 7. Shirley Temple in “Batchelor & the Bobby-soxer.” Really comical. We enjoyed it very much. Is. went with him to curl, & I bathed, set hair & went to bed.
14 Sat. Keith curled at 1 so we went to watch for our hour. They have been winning so curled again at 6. Miserable night, so I came home & had supper then Isabelle came down with the car for me. They curled steady until after 1.30 & won 2 games but lost the third. It sure was exciting. They won second place in the Consolation, a wool blanket. Terrible blizzard tonight. Keith stayed here until 3.45. We were too much in love to say to say good night. Got valentine at 1.45 a.m.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
