A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

Feb 1     Sun. Up shortly after 8. Wilma took Uncle for a cutter ride, then, we showed him what was in the Cedar Chest. Drifting badly, but we made it to town alright & went to Mitchells for 2 o’clock dinner. Nice time. Folks left at 4.30. Rest of us went to Church, then Isabelle & I came back to the room. Service very good.

2            Mon. Uncle Syd phoned down & dated us for dinner. Had a nice one at Busses. We phoned Keith this aft and told him to try to get in. He brought all the folks, we met Uncle after Rotary. Went to the show at 7.30. “The Unfaithful,” with Ann Sheridan. Fair. All went to Powers. Sang & ate. Real nice time. Keith looked so nice. We took Uncle Syd to Mitchells. Home here at one.

3            Tues. Up at 6.10 & walked down to the train. Uncle Syd was on it, but came off & talked & seemed quite pleased we went down. Keith met me at the store when I was going to work about 1.45pm. Gave me a ride. Came up to the Office before going home. We went to bed early tonight.

4            Wed. Slept in til 8.20 this morn. Don’t want to do that again. Made work in time. Worked til 3 this aft, then lay down & slept awhile. Wilma phoned. Supper early. Doris came over & the girls did homework. I wrote a letter & then went & Played for the Old Timers Dance with Irelands. Good crowd. Good time. Irelands brought me home.

5            Thurs. Didn’t feel too badly today. Went over to Williamson’s & washed & wet my hair tonight. Isabelle has laryngitis. Is sick to her stomach tonight. She went to bed immediately. Pretty cold night.

6            Fri. Set my hair tonight, washed stockings, bathed etc. Isabelle was home all day. Feeling a bit better tonight though. We went to bed in good time. A party on at Larsons but it didn’t keep us awake for long.

7            Sat. Isabelle went to work. We kept fairly busy. Folks all came to town, & Keith brought the car in later this aft, to stay in for the bonspiel (curling). We went to Harpers after supper. Played Rummoli. Marge was there too. Had a riotous time. Home about 1 o’clock.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
