A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

25          Sun. Up before 9.30 and went to Church. The music was wonderful. Had dinner & we lay down for an hour or so. Heard a play on the radio. Went to the Band Concert. Real good. Miserable night. I gave the kids their treats at Comm. Keith was able to stay here again. I love him so much.

26          Mon. Keith walked downtown with me, then phoned me from Margaret’s & we went there for dinner. He had to go on the train as 12.30. I had a nice chat with Marg. Charlie at the Oil Dept today, & Alf & Mary away. Also Mr. G., so things very quiet. Doris & Isabelle did homework here tonight. I went to bed at 9.30. Asleep right away.

I remember my Dad telling stories of train travel between Colgate and Weyburn when he was dating mom. Colgate had no direct connection to Weyburn so his choice was to go East to Midale (on the Soo Line) or West to Radville. He told me he took the last passenger train to ever go East out of Colgate. When he got to Midale he caught a ride with the Milkman. The bridge washed out the following spring and the route was never reopened. It is not clear where he was headed on January 26, 1948, but he may have the the twice-a-week mixed train via Radville, to Colgate. I have first hand memories of trains through Colgate. I remember the mail coming in by train on Tuesday and Saturday. I remember watching the trans from my bedroom window, 2 miles away.

27          Tues. C.C.Y.M. Theatre Party tonight. Only 8 of us went. First show which was “Tempatation” (Only fair).  Then to the Hostess Club, as I am Vice President I had to take the Meeting. Claire had good educational. Learned a hand clap. Home before 11.

28          Wed. Sent my Income Tax in this morn. Washed & waxed the floor then went skating with Gladys, Marge, Ray, Audrey. Had a grand time. Ice was wonderful. Skated with Mae. Came home & cooked a good dinner, then Isabelle, Doris & I went to the first show “My Heart Goes Crazy.” Cute show, but the Royal Wedding in technicolor was grand. Had pop at the Commercial.

29          Thurs. Isabelle went to work with me. Got a balance, & all the statements in the mail. Stayed in tonight & cooked a good supper, did up the work, and it was bedtime.

30          Fri. Dashed home tonight. I set my hair then Is. & I went to a musicale in the Legion “Night in Vienna.” The music was grand, especially the singing of “My Hero!” I loved it. Home at eleven.

31          Sat. Mom & Uncle Syd came in on the noon train. We had dinner with them. Dad pulled the car to the road & we all went out home. The rest with McGugans, & Is., Uncle & I took the car at six. I phoned Keith from the Office, but he couldn’t come. He phoned me about 9.30 & said the plough hadn’t gone that far. We had music, lunch, then a real old Political Discussion. Bed about 1.30.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
