A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

18          Sun. Isabelle went to Church. I still don’t feel so hot. After lunch we went over to Williamsons. Mrs. Myers & family, Kay, her sister-in-law & little boy were all there. Grand supper. Gladys came home with me & I wrote a letter to Keith, then Doris & Isabelle came a bit later.

19          Mon. Real warm. Went to work. Felt pretty rotten all morn, but better this aft. Paid for Keith’s Wedding ring at noon. It is really nice. Miserable weather tonight. Terrific wind. Stayed in tonight. I wrote to Mrs. Boyle & went to bed in good time.

20          Tues. Weather terrible again this aft. Hurried at supper & both went to a C.C.F. Organization Meeting in Hostess Club. T.C. Douglas spoke very well. We even shook hands with him tonight. I played piano before, and for singing.

21          Wed. Washed my hair this aft, worked, & made lemon pudding. Turned out fair. Maybe I’ll get it to suit Keith yet. Weather terrible. Mom came in with Giroux to go to Regina tomorrow. Mae came up at 4, so there were 4 of us for supper, then went to the show “Wild Harvest,” Alan Ladd. Mom treated us to David Harems. Set my hair after.

22          Thurs. Plough went South this morn, so I had high hopes, but it started blowing again this aft, & bad tonight. Isabelle went to the hospital to Jean Bowditch. She went to Williamsons after. I went to bed at a reasonable time.

23          Fri. Beautiful evening so Is. & I went to the show, “The Hucksters.”  Stupid but comical. One smooching bee lasted for 6 min. We nearly died laughing. Set hair and washed stockings. Fairly late when we got finished.

24          Sat. Keith & Mr. Boyle came in today. So Is. & I had dinner with them at Busses. I helped Keith pick out material for a new suit. It is really nice. He stayed in much to my joy. We stayed home tonight, talked & listened to radio. Is. Went to bed at 10.30. Keith slept upstairs in empty room.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
