A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

11          Sun. up at 8.30. Marge & Allan were to call for us at 9 but didn’t come until after 10. We went out home & then Mom invited Boyles up. The came for dinner & we had a very enjoyable time. I had to iron the curtains for our room. Right after supper it started blowing terribly. Marge & Allan had come back to town. So Keith & the men brought us in. We didn’t have any trouble. Had Larsons radio in here tonight.

12          Mon. Board Meeting this aft. Marge worked in the Office. I fell through the plasterboard where the floor was being fixed & bruised myself up. Norman rescued me. Had dinner downtown & got my tooth fixed. Dot, Marg, Is. & I had supper downtown & went to the show. “Love & Learn.” quite good.

13          Tues. My hip & is pretty sore. Terrible bruise on it. Is & I received a letter from Mrs. Boyle tonight & I got one from Keith. What a lovely surprise! Went to the Hostess Club early & practiced with Alice then C.C.Y.M. Meeting. McKay & Broughton both there. Very good. I was on Social & lunch. Didn’t get home til after 12 with Goransons.

14          Wed. Snowed this morn & is blowing terribly tonight. Store closed at 12 today. Is. didn’t come home for dinner. I cleaned up the room until 3 o’clock then slept for two hours. Cooked supper while Isabelle scrubbed the floor. She & Doris W. went to the show. Went to bed in fair time.

15          Thurs. Pay-day. Very little business these days. Isabelle didn’t come home at noon. Very cold. About 24 below. Dot & Marge came up for the evening. We had a good time. Gabbed & had lunch. Ham sandwiches & pickles, cake revels.

16          Fri. Isabelle’s radio came today. It sure is cute. She set it up tonight. I have a sore throat & feel kind of miserable. Went to bed at 9.30 but was still awake after one. Felt terrible. My throat & head

.17          Sat. Went to work this morn, but came back home at 10. Feel terrible. Sick & such a cold. My head feels so heavy tonight. Isabelle went to the show with Doris W. I went to bed quite early.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
