A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
Jan 1 Thurs. Another queer New Years. Up at 10. Bathed, cleaned up, straightened the room & had Doris up for a very plain dinner at 1. At 3 she went to Laings & we went to Harpers. Marge was there & Irma home from Hospital. Had a lovely dinner at 6. Embroidered & Marge crocheted while Dot & Isabelle played cards.
2 Friday. Busier than the dickens all day. Wish I could see Keith today, on his 26th Birthday. Is. & I went to the first show “Fiesta” in technicolor with Esther Williams. Very good. Had a milk shake. Men brought some things in today.
3 Sat. Dad wanted to know if we would like to come out home, but I said no right away. Isabelle planned to go, but was drifting badly at six, so she didn’t. Mom, Dad & Shirley were in. I went up & had supper with Doris. Came home at 8. We melted snow & I washed my hair.
4 Sun. Supposed to go out with Giroux’s this morn, Boyles to come up & we would come in again this aft, but blew so no one went any place. Is & I went downtown for some magazines, had Larson’s radio. Went to church tonight. New Minister Rev. Leitch was there.
5 Mon. Slept in until 8.10. Sure hurried but felt swell. Nice & busy in the office. We had all the dishes dirty tonight, cooking & stuff. I went to Irelands and practiced with them to play Wed. night. Is. called on way back from hockey. Had a lovely lunch. Bill Kempthorn gave us a ride home.
6 Tues. CCYM having skating party at the rink tonight, after which we all went to Busses for lunch. Very nice time. Good attendance. Home about 11. Glad the responsibility of it is over.
7 Wed. Cleaned the room, bathed etc. until 5, then lay down but couldn’t sleep. Is. & I went to the show. Met Doris & Gladys W. who went too. “The Corpse Came C.O.D.” A comic mystery. Really good. I played with Irelands at the Old Timers Dance in the Legion. Good crowd.
8 Thurs. Didn’t feel too bad today, but awfully tired tonight. Wrote Keith a long letter and sent him the snaps. Went to bed shortly after. Mr. Gerardin still in Regina since Tuesday & Alf went up today too.
9 Fri. Keith came in to the Office after 12.30. Sure swell to see him. We went to the room for dinner. Would have been O.K. only so rushed & had to take Is. back to School. Keith kissed me, in the car on the way back. We went to Armits & had our rings put away for us. Duffy showed us our Kitchen Suite. It is nice. Dad brought our clothes to town. We had a whole evening of straightening around.
10 Sat. Folks came to town with Stutts. Isabelle, Alice, Doris & I bowled tonight, then went to their room for lunch. Home before 12 but I couldn’t get to sleep until 2.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
