A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

28          Sun. Everyone woke up early. Keith & we four girls. All went to Rally Day Service in town. Mom had a yummy dinner ready when we got home. Keith & I left here at 4.20. Called on Stutt’s a few minutes, at Wray’s a few min. & at Elmer’s (went in). Gord & Marg were there. Went to Boyles, had supper & all went to Church. Mr. & Mrs. Boyle sat on either side of me at the piano this evening & we sang. They made me very happy. I stayed overnight.

29          Mon. Keith, his mom & I picked up Doris, Isabelle & Eleanor, & we all went to town. I didn’t feel tired at work. Keith, Is. Eleanor & I went to the first show tonight. “Living In A Big Way” with Gene Kelly. Pretty good. Had lunch at Commercial where Teddy treated us to candy. We had a lot of fun.

30          Tues. Washed my hair & everything I could lay my hands on tonight. Read quite a little while Doris was out to the show, so I was alone, a good part of the evening.

Oct 1     Wed. Busy as the dickens. Eleanor left this aft. I stayed in town. Read quite awhile then actually slept. Cleaned my drawers out. Isabelle & I went to Ivy’s tonight. Marie is a little darling. We had a lovely time & grand lunch.

2            Thurs. Felt a bit sleepy today. Terribly busy. Isabelle & I went to see the “Egg & I.” Really comical. I got a big bang out of it. Went to bed in good time but couldn’t get to sleep.

3            Fri. Mom came to town for Isabelle & I. Edna went out with us. I was thrilled when Keith phoned & said he was coming up to go to the dance. It was put on by C.C.Y.M. at South Weyburn. Had a really nice time, but wouldn’t have if Keith hadn’t been there. He brought Isabelle & I back to town. Got to bed at 2.15. Good crowd at the dance.

4            Sat. Isabelle & I worked tonight. Keith took us home (his folks were with us.) We had lunch at home then Shirley & I went home with Boyles. Keith & I went to bed about 2.15. He is a dear.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
