A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
5 Sun. We all went to Rally Day Service at Sunday School. Very nice. Had a grand dinner, then Keith & had a sleep. Mr. Boyle & Shirley also. Communion Service tonight. Keith brought us back home after leaving his folks a Davies. We talked a good deal even though a bit sleepy.
6 Mon. Mom brought us to town, the car broke & she had to wait til noon for a ride out, so folded bills for us. Grand surprise tonight! Keith came, I was in bed already, but soon got up. We went to the show while his folks went to Estevan. Didn’t start til 9.30 & lasted til 12. “Razors Edge.” Queerest picture. Boyles got back at 12.40.
7 Tues. Set my hair tonight, caught up my diary, read awhile and went to bed before 9.30. Asleep shortly after.
8 Wed. I went down to the Church & found Boyles car, shortly after 2, as they were at Mrs Davie’s funeral. Keith, his Mom, Mrs. Smith & I went up to Mrs. Mackays. Mr. Boyle came up later. We had a nice visit, & lunch.
9 Thurs. Fairly good day at work. Listened to Wayne & Shuster & I turned up my dress. Set my hair, read, as Doris had gone to the show with Clairy so I went to bed.
10 Fri. Keith came in & informed me that Margaret was coming so we met the train, then went to Colgate to Jim McMannus Wedding Dance. Took Mrs. B. & Mrs. Smith home at lunch time & all ate. Woke Mr. Boyle up. Played the piano. Had a real good time at the dance after supper. Keith brought me up home. Stayed for about 1/2 hour.
11 Sat. Up at 7 and came right in with Mr. Stutt. Got off work a six. Mom was in for us. Boyles called in on way home too & Keith stayed here overnight, as Mom wanted us home for Thanksgiving Dinner. Folks stayed up until 1.30 listening to radio. Dad was in town with Stutts. We had Pumpkin pie for lunch.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
