A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
21 Sun. Up at 9.30. Beat Keith! He, Isabelle, Wilma & I all lay on the couch this aft, pig fashion. It’s nice to be big kids. Keith, Isabelle & I took our car, met Alice at the Church & followed her out to their place where we had supper. We all went to Church at Talmage, where I played for Alice to sing. Is. & I also sang after Church at the party for Bob Bates. Home at 11.20. Boyles had come after Keith.
22 Mon. Things went pretty well. Keith brought my whole family to town, we met Is. & Eleanor at the theatre & all went to the second show. Maureen O’Hara & Cornell Wilds in “Homestretch.” Technicolor. Very good. Keith brought me flowers tonight & dahlias. I was very thrilled, as that is the first time anyone has ever brought flowers for me.
23 Tues. Doris, Isabelle & I went to C.C.Y.M. tonight. About 18 kids there. We had a real good time. First meeting this Fall. Neil joined, much to my surprise. Had a huge lunch. Curled my hair when we got home

24 Wed. Mom came in for Eleanor & I at noon. The men are combining at home, so we took lunch out to them. I did some various things & got some clothes fixed. I am dead tired tonight. Is. came out after school.
25 Thurs. We three came to town with Harry B. this morn. Charlie was working at the Store a good part of the day. I’ll be glad if things ever really get straightened out. Doris went out. I went to bed real early — exhausted.
26 Fri. Charlie was there most of the day. We really cleaned the Office up. Looks spic and span now. Curled hair and read this evening.
27 Sat. Had a busy day, but got along pretty well. Isabelle & I worked tonight. Keith came to town so Mom & girls went home early. We kids took Eleanor home with us. It rained today & roads terrible South, so Keith stayed here. My cedar chest came and I am very pleased with it. Folks went to bed about 12.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
