A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
14 Sun. Keith went home at 7.30 & took his Mother & Dad to Weyburn, then came back here for breakfast. We all went to Bill Pierces this afternoon. Had a lovely supper, and a nice time. Dad took his Mouth Organ with him. Mom waited up til 11.20 tonight. Keith stayed until his Mom & Dad came out from town about 11.40. They came in & talked a few minutes. I sure think they are swell.
15 Mon. Dad took us to town this morn. There is so much work I can’t keep up to it. Rained again, so the folks all came in & we went to Powers. Mr. & Mrs. Gamble were there. Real nice time & grand lunch. They have their piano, so we made use of it.
16 Tues. Stewarts away yesterday & today & Doris out tonight. So I lay down then the phone rang & you couldn’t see me for dust. It was Keith dating me for the show. He picked up Wilma, we met Isabelle at work & all went to see “Wake Up & Dream” with June Haver & John Payne. Cute & Comical. Bed about 12 o’clock.

17 Wed. Rained some more. We are sure sick of it. It never stops. Dad came to town for me. Mom & Wilma had had their dinner, & the house all cleaned. The ladies came in & quilted my sunbonnet baby quilt. It looks lovely. Wilma & I made a lush salad for lunch. finished some embroider work tonight. Isabelle came out with Sterling Girls.
18 Thurs. Isabelle came back to town with Sterling Girls. The weather is terrible. Found out today Stewarts are leaving soon, so Doris & I have to look for a new boarding place. I stayed home tonight & washed my hair.
19 Fri. Sun finally shone a little this afternoon. Eleanor, Isabelle & I went to the first show. Frank Sinatra & Jimmy Durante, Katherine Grayson. Really good. I love Jimmy Durante. We had sodas then I had pumpkin pie alamode.
20 Sat. Really got things caught up & under control today. Eleanor & I cleaned out the vault. Eleanor is very nice. Isabelle & I got off work at 6.30 & Mom took us home. Keith’s Mom & Dad brought him up. They just stayed a few minutes. We had a bit of lunch. Keith stayed overnight. We had a lot of fun.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
