A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

31 Sun. We all went to Boyles for 1.30 dinner which was just grand, including Chicken. Keith showed us kids the house. Mothers tried planning the rooms. We took pictures. Had lunch again at six, then Keith & I took Margaret to Regina in the car. Left home at 8.15 & got to Grahams about 10.40. Stayed there all night. They have a very nice place. We all went to bed between 12.30 & 1.00. Enjoyed the trip up. Margaret & I sang all the way. Keith joined in too.
Sept 1 Mon. Labor Day. Up about 8.30 & left at 10. Called on Aunt Mena & Uncle Tom. Roy was there too. We got back out home at 12.30 & had dinner. Keith had to hurry home as it is a beautiful day & the harvest behind. I have enjoyed the trip very much. Mom & I sewed all afternoon. Cleaned up a lot of odds & ends. Bed early.
2 Tues. Mom brought Isabelle, Doris, Edna & I to town. Wilf was finished Saturday night, so I am in charge in the Office, & no Manager there yet. The strain is grim. Keith came up for a jiffy at noon, as they are getting repairs. Ross, Mrs. Hamilton & daughter are here today. I went to bed in good time tonight.
3 Wed. To work at 8.20 this morn. Is. came back with me at 2 p.m. & I worked til 3.45. We ate then went to her room at Buchanan’s, made an Eaton Order & played the piano. Cleaned our room. Arline & I were alone this evening, so embroidered.
4 Thurs. Doris & I broke a record this evening. We went downtown together & had sodas, mine lime mm – good. Talked to Carl awhile. The responsibility at the store is an awful strain.
5 Fri. Found out today Grace is definitely leaving. She didn’t know how soon. I stayed in tonight. Sort of relaxed for a change.
6 Sat. Grace left for good this aft. I worked alone tonight. Rained today, so the folks & Keith were all in town this eve. I went home with Keith. All talked until 11.30. Keith asked me to go home with him, but an Executive Meeting tomorrow, so I thought I shouldn’t.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
