A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

24           Sun. Had Breakfast then Isabelle came for me. Keith came up at 12.30 & we all had a good dinner. Left with 2 cars at 2 & drove to the dam thence on South of Tribune. Parked awhile then they left & we came back home. Sure hated to see them go. Mary is a swell scout. Keith came back with us. Talked about silverware looked snaps. We loved very much tonight. Nothing can part us now.

25           Mon. Isabelle brought us to town. Wilf informed me today that I have to take over until a new Secretary comes as he is leaving Saturday night. It makes me sick to think about it. Washed hair, heard Lux & asleep by 9.

26           Tues. Keith & Marg came to town with Mom & girls tonight. They picked me up & we all went to the show. “Nora Prentiss” with Ann Sheridan. It was stupid. Got into the Club. The kids were acting crazy, so had a good laugh. Keith invited us to their place for Sunday.

27           Wed. Is. Started Business School this morn, so she brought the car in & we both went home at noon. Wilma & I cleaned all drawers etc. in my room. Even went up in the attic. Is. & Mom canned fruit. Men are digging cesspool. No Co-op Picnic on account of Shirley having Chicken Pox. Set hair tonight.

28           Thurs. Mom brought us in to town today. Mr. Girardin is in town looking for a house. Is. called for me tonight & we went to show Mrs. Powers my ring, thence to Dots for Mae’s shower. Had a lot of fun, & the most wonderful lunch. She received some lovely gifts. After 12 when we got home.

29           Fri. Slept in til 8.20. Gee! Did I move. Feel very weary & tired. Keith called up to the Office for a moment on way home from town. Set my hair etc. this evening. Went to bed after 9, as Doris went out to the bush. Had a very good sleep.

30           Sat. Had a fairly good day for the end of the month. Auditor there all day. We had to stay after 9.30 for him to check all our cash, so didn’t get out until 10.30. Mom, Dad & Wilma were waiting for me. (so was Keith when I got home.) Had ice-cream. He stayed until 2.20. We talked quite a bit this evening.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
