A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

17           Sun. Boyles went away at 9.30. We Four had breakfast, then came up home. Took the two cars & drove to town around the Mental, the park, Reg Metherals & attend Legion Memorial Service. Back out home at 5.15. Played ball had picnic supper in house, played anti-i-over, then went walking. Most beautiful evening. Cut up some more in the house. Really raised the roof. It has been a perfect day. Keith & Marg went home about 12.45.

18           Mon. Aunt & gang brought Doris & I to work, then went on to Regina. Mary discovered my ring in Coffee Bar at 10.30 & soon everyone knew. I am bubbling over with happiness. The staff are all like one big family. They are so interested, & all wished us happiness. Mary brought me a present of a pair of towels. I kept kids while Doris & Arline went to show tonight.

19           Tues. Wasn’t kept very busy today. Wilf said he won’t be at work tomorrow & Thurs. I stayed in tonight again. Set hair & went to bed in decent time.

20           Wed. We kids could hardly keep busy this morn. I went downtown about 1.30 to look for a ride home & saw Mr. Woodwork. Got out at 3. Mom, Shirley & I took lunch to Dad & Wilma at 4. Them Mom & I made tea towels & sheets. Also took my things out of the trunk. Really accomplished things.

21           Thurs. Never put in such a terrible day in my life. Not a thing to do. Martha & Del & Grace left early. Wilf still not there. I even embroidered. Aunt Ev & kids got back at 5.45 so waited for me. We had a short Staff Meeting re picnic then went out home with them. Showed them my things & played Finance. Kids brought me back in before ten. Arline & I had a long talk.

22           Fri. Could hardly keep busy today. Heat & humidity was terrible. Mom, Aunt Ev & Mary were in town & came up to the Office. That filled in a little time. Last minute party turned up at home as Dot, Marge, Glad & I went out. Had toast, sausage & egg. Made a campfire. Stacks of fun. Keith called, but couldn’t hear him very well.

23           Sat. Kids all waited til six for me. Went out home. All cleaned up snazzy tonight. Boyles (whole family) came at right about nine. We talked had some real nice music (harmony) & Is. & I helped serve lunch. I went to Stutts with Boyles, and stayed all night. (What was left of it.)

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
