A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
10 Sun. Mom & we 3 girls came in to Church at the Baptist, Rev. Stewart. Called on Ted, Trena & Donna, then stopped a minute at McGugans. Home & had lunch then all went to Freemans. Myrna is there. We had a lovely supper. Ruth is very cute. Talked “Wedding” at home this eve.
11 Mon. Mr. Stutt brought us to town. Keith brought his Mom, my Mom, Isabelle & Wilma to town tonight. We met Margaret at the bus, then all went to the show. “Rebecca” with Joan Fontaine. Long & gruesome. But pretty good. Keith told me some more about our house tonight. I am so happy I could have talked all night.
12 Tues. American Co-op Tour came through today. We kids had a terrible time trying to keep busy. Grace is back at work, as of yesterday. Doris & I went swimming tonight. Water was sure cold. Washed & set my hair after.
13 Wed. Is., Wilma, Mary & Bessie came in about 11.15 this morn & surprised me. We went home at 12.30. Aunt Eveline & Ken are here too. Ted Patterson called in a few min. this afternoon. We kids went to the school in Ken’s car. Played ball, music then came in to Weyburn tonight. Drove around, had sodas, then stayed in town.
14 Thurs. Found out at 5.30 that Keith was in town. He met me at six & we had supper with his folks in the Comm. Then he, Margaret & I went to the show “The Daltons Ride Again.” Real western but cute & comical. Raining when we came out. Keith took Margaret up to the house, then brought me home. He says he hopes to have a ring for me by next week.
15 Fri. Mr. & Mrs. Powers picked me up at 7.30, & we went out home. Saunders kids & us sorted pictures, then we all had some music. Mary is sure a card. Had a whale of a time. Powers enjoyed it very much too. We had a swell lunch, then back to town about 11.30.
16 Sat. I worked tonight. Is. helped me. The whole gang of kids went bowling (8 of us) including Doris & Keith. Took an hour for the second game as we just had one alley, but fun anyway. Keith gave me the most beautiful diamond as soon as we got home. I am very thrilled & happy. We ate 4 bricks of ice-cream for lunch. Mary & I went home with Keith. His Mom & Dad were awake, so we showed then the ring.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
