A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
3 Sun. Keith & Marg made most of the breakfast. Had the most wonderful time today. Heat was intense but we dropped over to see the kids house then called on Elmer & Linda. Boyles came home at 1. Margaret & I made dinner while the rest went to a funeral. Boys brought ice-cream home. 3 kids went swimming & we played crocket awhile. Drove down to Colgate this evening. Marg & Gord left after. Keith & I told his Mom & Dad of our engagement. They are wonderful! Keith brought me home.
4 Mon. Mom is still in Regina. Almost suffocated today. Isabelle brought Doris & I to town. She left the car in, gave me the keys, & went home with Jean B. Mom came in tonight. I met here. We ate & talked for quite awhile. She came up to the house. Lovely evening. She left at 9.30.
5 Tues. Was going to go to Ivy’s but looked after Sonya, so it got too late. Practice my music & really enjoyed it. Went downtown with Doris & Dolly, when they came from swimming, & ate. Had a milk shake & mince pie. Lovely evening again.

6 Wed. George Crane & Monty waited til 12.30 for me, then Wilma met me at Staffords corner. Mom went to aid & Is. at Stutts cutting. Henry Simms from Froude came at 2.30 & stayed til 7. What a character. We kids nearly died. Keith came up tonight about 9. Finally got the family together, & we told them of our engagement. They didn’t say much but seemed to be pleased.
7 Thurs. I was just bubbling over, so told all the Stewarts at noon, & Doris tonight. It rained hard & Mr. S. Drove me back to work. I went up to the pool with Dolly & Doris at 6.30 & took a lesson. Got along famously. We kids talked a good while when we got home.
8 Fri. Cold this morning so I changed into stockings & suit, it turned hot & I cooked all afternoon. Went swimming again tonight. Enjoyed it, but didn’t do as well as last night. Practiced awhile, & set my hair. Looked after Sonya & Stewart. Sonya cried until 10.15.
9 Sat. Wilf let me go out for ice-cream with Mom about 5. I got off at six & went out home. Russes called in, then Keith came. He & we girls made a rush trip to town, & took out some ice-cream. Woodworks, Stutts & Garlands were there. We had fun. All left about 11.30. Keith & Wilma measured the front room to see how big our house is going to be. Keith & I talked a lot about our home to-be.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
Engaged last week and measuring the front room of the prospective home this week. THAT happens quickly. It does raise a question. Where did your family home come from?
