June 22-28, 1947

This is Boyles 35th Wedding Anniversary. Thursday, June 26, 1947

22           Sun. I stared out the South Window most of the afternoon. Didn’t get up until 11.15. Finally Keith came around 4. Mom was sick so we kids got supper. Keith taught us how to play lawn crocket after supper, even though it was a little damp. Folks went to bed before 10. I have a date with my dream man for Wed.

23           Mon. Mr. Stutt brought us to town. Isabelle didn’t come in. Grace & I got the Refund Statements all out today. Quite proud of ourselves. I washed & set my hair this evening. Practiced quite awhile.

24           Tues. Had a good day’s work, & just finished in time. Doris & I both stayed in tonight & really didn’t accomplish anything. Played with Stuart on the bed for quite awhile. Doris & I had a gab session.

10 Years Earlier

25           Wed. Keith was in town this morn. I went out with him. Had dinner, at our place, then went on to his home. Washed the car, then about 4.30, he, Mr. B. & I went to Colgate Sports. Rained before six, so everything stopped. Had lunch with my sisters. We got stuck going back to Boyles. I went in the house at Gordon Bells. She seems real nice. Keith brought me home about 10. We had a wonderful talk tonight. He left at 1 like a good kid.

26           Thurs. Mom & Isabelle brought me in this morn. Keith was up to see me at noon then I saw them again before 2. This is Boyles 35th Wedding Anniversary. They left for Regina, were going on to Saskatoon. I had a terrible long day as I didn’t have enough work to do. Took my lesson after supper. Saw the Ferguson twins at noon.

27           Fri. A little busier today. Helped Grace try to balance this aft. Got our pay cheques, & do I ever need mine. Doris packed tonight for her trip tomorrow. I set my hair, & got my things all ready to go home.

28           Sat. Rained again. Its almost a daily occurrence. Is. came in this morn. & worked all day. I worked til 9.30 tonight. Mom & Dad were in for me. Went right out home after work.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
