June 15-21, 1947

We played ball in the pasture, Dad umpiring. Tuesday, June 17, 1947

15           Sun. Mom, Wilma & Mrs. Stutt came in, & we all went to Church. After lunch we kids all played in the trees & dozed for about 2 hours. Beautiful day. Keith wasn’t going to come tonight, but we were all in the front Room after supper when in he drove. Gee, was I surprised & pleased. Miss Fahlman came over for awhile & we kids all went for a ride in the Plymouth. Keith & I had a lot of time to ourselves after 11, but didn’t talk much.

16           Mon. Isabelle & I brought the car in & kept it today. Doris & Edna came with us. I felt swell all day. Stayed home tonight, raised hell & put a prop under it. Did up everything ~ pressing, cleaning shoes, diary writing, practiced 3/4 of an hour. Went to bed at 10 after reading, & slept right away.

17           Tues. Is. & I took the car back out home at six. Doris, Edna & Arlyne Milliper went our with us. C.C.Y.M. Group came to our place. We played ball in the pasture, Dad umpiring. Had oodles of fun. Keith came up. 5 cars of kids dashed to get some willows at the correction line. Built a fire in the trees & roasted weiners, & had a huge lunch. Beautiful evening. Told stories, sang songs, after lunch. I came back to town with May at 12.

Mom had a long interest in baseball. Here we see Wilma pitching to her in 1936. Look at that stance — the scouts for a “League of Their Own” must have missed seeing Mom!

18           Wed. Rode out home with Jean B. at noon. Is. Is out there. She & I had a sleep this aft. Then I knit on my gloves most of the time. Folks came in with Bowditches tonight, to the Old Timers Dance in the Legion, as I came back with them. Set my hair. Read a bit.

19           Thurs. Went to the Choir supper in the Church at 7.30. Lovely supper. Choir had photo taken after. They insisted that I be in it. Rained cats & dogs tonight. Came home with Stewarts in the car.

20           Fri. Rained most of the day. I did a lot of Stenography. Have been terrible worried this week as Powers threatened to resign, over gossip about him & Bonnie, but I think now maybe she will resign. Isabelle & I both stayed home tonight like good kids. Really accomplished a good deal though, so it was worth it.

21           Sat. Rained all day again. Work was fine. I got off at six, & Dad & Shirley were in for Isabelle & I. I embroidered all evening. About 9.30 Russ, Lillian & Freddie came in. We had an enjoyable time. Connie was in town. They left at 12:45.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
