June 29 – July 5, 1947

This is my last day of work for three weeks Saturday, July 5, 1947

29           Sun. Wilma, Isabelle & I came in to Church this morn. Lovely attendance. After lunch we went down to Linda’s. Here baby is very big. We sat on the veranda & talked. Had a lovely supper. Home about 8. Rounded up a few things for our coming trip East.

30           Mon. Rained. Isabelle & I brought the car to town. Both worked all day. Got our tickets, travellers cheques, etc. & came home tonight. Mom, Dad, Is. & I went to a shower for Pearl Williams, at south Weyburn. Had lunch early. Is & I sang at times to fill in.

July 1     Tues. Public Holiday. I did quite a bit of ironing. Washed, pressed clothes & sewed etc. getting everything ready for our trip. Lay down awhile, but didn’t sleep. Beautiful aft. Dad mowed the lawn. Wilma & I washed the car. We all went over to Killians this evening to see Barbara, Joe & baby.

2             Wed. Is & I went to town this morn. She worked, then came home at noon. I washed my hair right after dinner & set it. Keith phoned me at the store this morn to get things for them. He came in this aft about 4.30. Asked me to go home with him. We came out home for supper then I cleaved up & I drove down to Boyles. About 9.30 we all went to a shower for Jim McManus. Keith & I had three dances in a row, then he took me back to town.

3             Thurs. Couldn’t eat much breakfast, but felt fine all day. Wasn’t terribly busy. I didn’t do any thing after supper. Went to bed at 8.15 and was asleep by 9 o’clock. Stewarts went to Regina today.

4             Fri. Stewarts went to Carlyle, so there are just Arline, Archie & I at the house. I set my hair tonight, cleaned the room, and rounded up all the rest of the things for my holidays. Folks phoned me when they got home from Colgate Fair.

5             Sat. This is my last day of work for three weeks, as I have an extra week holiday without pay. Wehave a new girl in the office. Martha Ryan who is learning my work. Got off at six. Mom & girls were in for me. Keith came up tonight & we played crocinole. He was sleepy, but we were both very happy.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
