June 8-14, 1947

we went to hear Douglas speak. He was wonderful as usual. Thursday, June 12, 1947

8             Sun. Washed stockings, cleaned, & bathed this morn. Boyles called in on their way home from Weyburn, Left Wilma here, and took me with them about 2 o’clock. Lay down awhile this aft. Keith & I walked for the cows, & it just pelted down, but I liked it anyway. Rained nearly all afternoon. I played the piano for a long time this evening, out of the Monster Imperial. They all enjoyed it. Keith & I talked quite awhile.

9             Mon. Holiday for King’s Birthday. Still at Boyles. I didn’t get up until ten. Helped with the work this morn. Keith & I lay down awhile this aft, then I played some pieces for Marg. It rained all day. Keith & I left for home about 4. Slippery but we didn’t have any trouble. Had supper, then played Crocinole. Had a lot of fun. Keith was going to leave at 12.00 but it was 1.30.

10           Tues. Wilf back at work today. Grand C.C.Y.M. Meeting tonight. Real good attendance, and we got though a lot of business. Doris had to work, so I looked after the Social. Ernie’s Gossip column was excellent. Salad (fruit), buns & cookies for lunch.

11           Wed. Most beautiful day. I washed my hair & set it. Accomplished a good deal. Tried to sleep but couldn’t. Isabelle & I went out home with Russ Mitchell. Left at 6.30 & stopped at the Cemetery. Talked out home. Had ginger ale & some wonderful chocolate cake that Mom had made. Back to town before eleven. I was awake until 12.

12           Thurs. Keith & I have been together for a whole year, & a very happy one it has been. I do know that I love him very much. He was in town today. Came up at Noon & got Is & I. C.C.F. Convention. He came for me as soon as my lesson was over & we went to hear Douglas speak. He was wonderful as usual. I played for the singing. Keith & I talked in the car when we got home. He is more wonderful all the time.

13           Fri. Nearly dead, but Mom came in for us, Isabelle, Audrey Ireland & I went home. Keith & Marg picked us up, & we all went to the dance at Riverview. Charlie played, & the music was really good. Had a swell time. Isabelle, Albert, Keith & I went out to the car at lunch time. I played a couple of dances which went over well. Had a swell time. Keith brought us back to town. Bed at 2.40.

14           Sat. Wilf in Saskatoon yesterday & today. So I did the payroll. Was awfully tired, but had to work tonight. Have certainly missed a lot of sleep this week. Stayed in town tonight, & was in bed at 10.20. Died for a few hours.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
