1944-04-08 to 04-14

8              Sat. We did up the work early. Mom & we girls went to town about 11.15. Took bread up to the room & had lunch there. Went out to Marg’s. The baby is very cute. Had home made candy. Then back into town to Cleland’s. Saw Helen, Stuart, Aunt Mena & Uncle Tom came out with folks. Isabelle & I came home with Stutts. Had music tonight & lunch. Bed about 11.20

9              Easter Sunday. I put snaps in my albums. We listened to Stars of Tomorrow, sang about an hour. I had a bike ride, played a little catch with the girls. Mom, Isabelle & Wilma took Aunt Mena & Uncle Tom to town. Went to church.

10           Mon. Mrs. McMannus, her daughter, & sister called in for a few minutes this morn. Mrs. Stuart, Helen, David, Joan & Mrs. Cleland were all out for dinner. Mom went up & got Mrs. Carpenter. Had a nice time. Lunch this afternoon. Mr. C. came out & got them. Dad & John worked on the tractor. Tired tonight.

11           Tues.  Mom & Wilma did the washing. Isabelle helped me kalsomine ceiling & walls of my room. It looks swell. Mom went to town with Freemans this afternoon. I finished my room. Isabelle washed her floor. Mary Lou was here all afternoon. She & Mr Stutt were here for supper. Bennngs called for her later tonight.

12           Wed. Men killed a beef. Mom & Isabelle kalsomined the hall walls & ceiling. Mr. Stutt was here for dinner. Wilma & I did the work. I gave she and Shirley lessons this afternoon & washed my head. We went to Freemans this evening to get our turkey.

13           Thurs. Dad cut up meat this morn. He & the girls got ready to go to town, but waited till after dinner. Mom ironed. I did my slip hem, had a rest, and did homework. Stutts went to Regina today.

14           Fri. Isabelle stayed in town with Aunt Mena. Home about 2.15. Had lunch in basement of the hotel. Mom took some meat over to Hawtons in the car, so I went to Stutts & stayed till she came back. Cleaned upstairs after returning home. Did odd jobs, this afternoon, Mended stockings, read, etc. tonight Dad, Mom, Isabelle & I went to Old Timer’s Dance in IOOF.  No young men there, Is & I danced. I played three for Beatrice. Had s fairly good time. Dad had a quadrille with us.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
