Feb 12   Sat. Cleaned house a bit. Miss Farrell came over this afternoon. Mom went to town with Freemans. I tried to get some homework done, we three girls went to Isabelle Sterlings Birthday Party. Met at Killians first. Had a good time. Played games & had contests. Lunch at 12. Home before one.

13           Sun. So sleepy! Studied nearly all day. The girls signed valentines. Fairly strong wind. I had a little rest. We got a box of valentine Candy from Uncle Syd’s so had some peanut brittle.

14           St Valentines Day. Mon. Mr Stutt brought us kids in. I thought I’d have a hectic morning, but it wasn’t so bad. When we got home at noon, Alma Burrowman & Peggy were sitting up here. Alma told us all about the Bensons. She is very slender now. Doris & I went downtown tonight after 4. Did homework after supper. Were in bed shortly after ten.

15           Tues. Stayed for singing after four. Walked home with Joanne. ___ ___ was here with Doris when I got home. I made a hurried trip downtown. We had supper, then Mrs Coulter & Phyllis came up to ask me to play I.O.O.F. Dance tomorrow night. Doris went to the show with Dean. We were to bed about 10.30.

16           Wed. We came right home after four. Had supper over real early. Mrs Coulter came up at 8.40 to say Charlie would call for me at 9.15. He did. Martha C. was with him. When we got to the hall, Frimiars were playing. Funny mix up. I came home again & studied. Charlie felt bad but I told him not to worry. Confidentially, I was glad!

17           Thurs. Choral Practice after school. Studied Literature. Doris went downtown after school. Saw the doctor & found out we both have scabes  (Prairie Itch) which has been bothering us since xmas (Doris before). I got supper ready. We were late. Mrs Sorrell came over and asked us to stay with Patsy. We got home at 10. Bed at 11.30.

18           Fri. Literature was terrible. Too long. Dad came in for us. Stan Robinsons were here for supper. Nice evening. Had some good music. I bathed & had to put salve all over myself, for the itch. Bed about 11.45

(scroll to the end of this post for a picture of the original diary entries in Mom’s handwritting)

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. She had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grade 11. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for CATP (Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
