A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
22 Sun. Up at 9. Lovely day. Went to Church. Had steak for dinner. Doris came over to get Is. & Audrey came for me, so I went walking with she & Beatrice Beaton. Went to the rink. Came home & wrote to Keith. Went to Church & the Band concert tonight. Both good & grand attendance.
23 Mon. I am on Mr. Girardin’s Curling Rink for the Novelty Bonspiel. Snowed inches last night, & quite a bit today. Is. went to the show. I bathed, set hair, washed stockings. Mended girdle & wrote this.
24 Tues. Very slow today. We all worked until 10 tonight. Stocktaking. Checked in our cash & then I did some extending. Stayed for tea. Home by 10.20 but still awake at 1.10. Feel kind of tough.
25 Wed. Store closed all day. Most beautiful weather. Thawing all day. Finished taking stock late this aft, but went back to work until 9 tonight. Isabelle went to Young Peoples. I came home & went to bed as I felt miserable all day.
26 Thurs. Received a nice letter from Keith this morn, which really gave me a lift. Five Coop rinks are entered in the Novelty Curling Bonspiel. I am on Mr. Girardin’s with Joe & Norman McGugan. We curled at 9. Won our game against O’Hanley, but I simply couldn’t get the rocks down there.
27 Fri. Dad came to town with Harry. Isabelle was home for dinner, so we carried all our things down to the Store & sent them home. Stayed in tonight. I set my hair & went to bed in pretty good time. People upstairs woke us early with noise.
28 Sat. Work went smoothly. 3 of the Staff were laid off, are finished tonight, Kay, Cathy & Lloyd. We made them a presentation. Isabelle curled at six on Alf’s Rink. They lost by 2. I went to Irelands to practice & she met me there. We both have colds & feels miserable. Had lunch there. Bathed when I got home.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
