A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
30 Sun. Keith went down & got his folks & Aunt Mary & took them in to Church. We kids took our car in & brought him out. Dr. McClure, a Missionary from China, spoke, He was wonderful. Kept everyone laughing. All went to Stutts for my Birthday Dinner. Received some lovely gifts. A hand mirror from Keith. Car broke so we walked home. Boyles called for Keith & stayed until 11.30. Mr. & Mrs. B. gave me towels & a doily. My love for Keith grows deeper every week.
Dec 1 Mon. Another year passed & now I have a diamond. I don’t feel older, but wonderful. Mr. Stutt brought Dad & we girls to town. I received more cards in the mail. Was terribly tired, so set my hair, bathed & went to bed at 9.15. Asleep right away. Frances Freeman came up to the Office to see me. Don’t remember her married name.
2 Tues. Beautiful day. Mom & Dad came to town with the neighbors. I met Mom at 1.40, & we went shopping. Isabelle & I addressed xmas cards tonight, then I talked her into going skating. Eriel went too, the ice was good, just the right number of kids, & we really enjoyed it. Had hot dogs.
3 Wed. Good morning. I went back to the Office after dinner & did a stencil & envelopes for Charlie for Young Fellows. Wrote a note and two other letters. Lay down when I came home. Didn’t sleep. Made two batches of candy for the C.G.I.T. kids tonight. Helped Isabelle check her Book K.
4 Thurs. Nice busy day. The new Office Girl, Mae Welland, is getting along fine. Isabelle & I went to the first show. Saw the “Royal Tour” through S. Africa, very good, & “Adventure Island.” Rather silly. I did a good job on my hair. Beautiful Day.
(Chris’s Note: Before TV and the nightly news, movie goers would keep up with world events by watching “newsreels” prior to the start of the main attraction in the theatre. I have first hand recollections of seeing a couple of these in my first movie going days in the late 1950’s)
5 Fri. Quite a day. My photos appointment was at 11.30 but Keith came in, so brought me home, then we went down in my noon hour. Chose our silverware pattern “Adoration.” Also picked out Wedding rings. I went and had my photo taken after 2, then Duffy called me to see the Hammond Man, so Keith & I ordered a kitchen suite. Mr. Coleman asked me to do the Credit Union work. Embroidered tonight.
6 Sat. Nice day until late, when it started drifting, but we went home. Mom was there & had supper ready. Keith didn’t come up tonight. Drifting too badly I guess. We kids wrapped all four presents, & put up the tree & got everything in general under control. Bed about midnight.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
