A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

23          Sun. It blew terribly hard in the night. We weren’t going to go to Boyles, but finally decided we’d try it & didn’t have any trouble. Had a grand chicken dinner. Mae & Russell were there she is nice but rather odd. We all went to Church after they left. Came back to Boyles for lunch. Brought Mr. Claire & Aunt Mary. Keith & I took them back then he brought me home. Folks were all in bed. Keith stayed til nearly 2. Our love was wonderful tonight. He is grand to me, and I think I’d do anything for him.

24          Mon. Drifted like everything in the night but Mr. Stutt took us all & Dad in in the truck & we got through. Drifted & blew all day today though. I was very happy all day. Business very poor. Isabelle went to “Forever Amber” with Harry. I washed & set my hair.

25          Tues. Good business today. I felt terrible this aft, but O.K. tonight. We went to C.C.Y.M. Good attendance, but meeting wasn’t so hot. Rev. Watts spoke very nicely.

26          Wed. Dad came in this morn just before 12, much to my surprise, so I came out home. Had a nice afternoon. Shirley went to Bennetts for the night so just the four of us here. Willis & Betty came over this evening. They talked & Wilma & I couldn’t get to sleep.

27          Thurs. It blew terribly in the night. Thought I wouldn’t get back to town, but made it with Sterlings. Between our place & Giroux’s is the worst. Keith was in. He walked to the Post Office with me. Sure hope he gets in Saturday. Co-op survey is being carried out. A fellow interviewed me today about labor conditions.

28          Fri. Very cool. We had a very busy day, what with Payroll & balances, so time went quickly. Isabelle went back to work. I lined things up for the bowling party. Didn’t sleep very soundly tonight.

29          Sat. Keith came in this aft. Wilma stayed in too, & they picked us up to go to the Social Club bowling party. We had a lot of fun, though Wilma & I changed off with Keith & Pete as there wasn’t room for us. Isabelle helped get lunch & entertain. Kay & I were on lunch committee & worked like everything. Is & I sang “Under The Old Umbrella” & “Harvest Moon.” Keith brought us out home. folks were still up. I am terribly tired. Keith stayed over night.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
