A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
26 Sun. Keith helped Isabelle haul straw, cut wood, fix the cart etc. Wilma & I did the inside work, made dinner. Mrs. Boyle sent up the most delicious angel food cake. Rested awhile, had supper. Keith took us all down to Church. We got his Mom & Dad. Stopped at their place & had lunch after Service. Keith stayed until 1.15. Love is Wonderful.
27 Mon. Froze very hard in the night. Is. & I came to town. She stayed in all day. Warmed up nicely at noon, but cold again tonight. Listened to Lux. My cold is much better. Group of Co-op kids called at the office this morn, & Ron Moats was with them. Sure was nice to see him.
28 Tues. Isabelle stayed out home all day. She & Wilma came in to C.C.Y.M. There were about 25 in attendance. Halloween Party. Grand time. We handled the remains of a dead body. Double lunch as 2 committees shared. Played games, etc. Heaps of fun. I bought new black dress at noon. Really a honey.
29 Wed. Isabelle & I went home at noon. I baked a pie, a shell & some tarts. Did scalloped potatoes for supper. Washed stacks of dishes, also my hair which I set after supper. We kids read the papers and went to bed before 9.30.
30 Thurs. We kids received our first letter from Dad today. Lovely one too, and a real thrill. Is. stayed in town all day & we went shopping at noon. Mrs. Buchanan straightened my dress on me tonight & helped me cut some off of it which I am very grateful.
31 Fri. Busy with pay & so on, but had a good day. Wrote some more letters, then set my hair & took a bubble bath. Had the heater lit in the bathroom. Lovely & warm. Keith phoned me & says he can come up tomorrow night.
Nov 1 Sat. Closed at six tonight. Mr. Boyle brought Keith to town, & took Shirley out home. Wilma stayed with her, & we 3 went to the Young Peoples’ Rally. Banquet tonight, and party. Had a very good time. Home about 11.30.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
