A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
19 Sun. I was up shortly after 8. Great hustling and bustling. Girls helped Dad with chickens, cleaned coop, etc. I baked cookies & a cake. Killian boys, John & Harry came this aft, & helped Dad with the work. Keith came this aft & stayed while his folks took Margaret to the train. They came back about 9.30 & had to go home again.
20 Mon. Mom & Dad left for Ontario by car with Killians at noon. Really swell. The girls are batching. Isabelle came in this aft & went to school & worked. I have an awful cold coming in & couldn’t sleep tonight. My throat sore & head aching.
21 Tues. Work goes pretty well these days. I went out home with Is. After we cleaned Mom’s bedroom & did numerous other jobs tonight. Went to bed about 10.15 but couldn’t get to sleep again. My cold is bad.
22 Wed. My cold is awful. Saw Keith this morn when he came in for his nails. Brought the car to town & went back home at noon. Isabelle worked at the other place & Wilma & I had a huge washing. Worked like the dickens. I ache all over tonight. Keith came up about 8.45 fast time. I sure was glad. Girls went to bed early. Keith left about 11.10 my time.
23 Thurs. Snowed today Started the morn & turned to rain late this aft. Isabelle was here for dinner. I ran down & saw Doris & Alice a few mins this eve. We slept in this morn until 7 as Is. hadn’t set the alarm.
24 Fri. Set my hair after show. Went to the first show with Audrey, Jean, & Beatrice. It was June Haver in “I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now,” in technicolor. Very cute. Didn’t sleep very well.
25 Sat. Woke up early, not feeling well. Not good all morn, but O.K. this aft. Is & I worked tonight. Keith brought Wilma to town. They went to the show, then met us. We all called in to say good-bye’s to Stewarts at the Church, had lunch & went home, Shirley stayed at Bowditches. Keith stayed overnight.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
