May 25-31, 1947

Hope they don’t get tired of having me around. Saturday, May 31, 1947

25           Sun. Debated about going with Keith or to the Rally in Town but chose Keith this time. We got his folks and all went to Church at Wesley. Mom & girls were all down too. Wilma & I went to L. Beaches with Boyles for supper. Had a grand time. Sang hymns before supper and Mr. B. played violin after supper with me. Very good. Keith brought us home about 11. He and I had a wonderful talk. The best in ages. He makes me so happy. The longer I am with him the better I like it.

26           Mon. Mom brought us to town. I am so happy. I think I bubbled over all day! Didn’t feel sleepy. Isabelle & I went to the show “Perfect Marriage.” It was fairly good. A little stupid.

27           Tues. Wilf not a work today or tomorrow. We had a C.C.Y.M. Annual Meeting. Grand attendance (21) and good time. 17 kids pinned. Isabelle is Treasurer, Doris Social Convenor & I am Vice-President. I had the Gossip Column which went over pretty well. Had Cheese & Ritz & Olives for lunch.

28           Wed. Mom was in town with Bowditches in truck, so I went home with them at 12.30. Washed & set my hair. I knit a lot on my glove, & Mom sewed. Wilma & I read magazines. Stutts came up for awhile this evening. Wilma slept with me.

29           Thurs. I came to town with Jean Sterling. Had my lesson after supper, then Isabelle & I went to a show in the Salvation Army Hall with Jean & Lottie Thurston. Nearly wept when I saw our old organ there. Saw the film of the “First Easter.” Went up to the girl’s suite for lunch. Had a nice time.

30           Fri. Isabelle & I stayed in like good kids tonight. Did a little of everything. Went to bed by 9.30 and right to sleep.

31           Sat. I was sure surprised when Keith appeared this aft. His folks were in too. I didn’t have to work tonight, so went home with them, after having supper in town. We had a nice evening. They talked me in to staying overnight. It didn’t take much coaxing. I enjoyed myself very much. Hope they don’t get tired of having me around.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
