1944-04-29 to 05-05

29           Sat. Gave Wilma & Shirley lessons. They took Leila home in the cart this afternoon. Dad and Isabelle went to town late. I really went through the homework. Also washed my head. Bed in reasonable time. Rained all day.

30           Sun. Dismal again today. Rained most of the time, but it is good to see! I studied. Played the piano this afternoon, also again tonight. Sorted through all the music. Could not get to sleep for the longest time tonight.

Spring

May 1    Mon. Rained. Mr Stutt brought us to town. We have new neighbors across the hall. Pat & Chris. We called on them tonight, amidst studying for a French test. They seem real nice. I washed, waxed & polished shed floor tonight. Doris went down town, go supper & cleaned out a cupboard. We moved out. Bed at 11.30.

2              Tuesday. Dean gave us a ride back to school at noon. I put in a dickens of an afternoon. An hour Literature, & then a French test. We both went down town after four. Rained again. We stayed a Sorrells tonight. Home shortly after ten.

3              Wed. We both went downtown after four. Came home and had supper, than were over at Pat’s for about an hour looking at her Bride’s book, etc. Sure talked for a long time. Did homework, Doris went over again.

4              Thurs. Got out a bit earlier at noon. We had Jean W. here for dinner, then went back early & went to the Port on a bus. Saw the Wing’s Parade. A really hot afternoon. Came back in. Mrs S., Mom & the girls were up at supper time. We stayed a Sorrells tonight til 9.30.

5              Fri. I had an hour spare, but had to study Literature. Doris & I came out with Dean. He brought us all the way. Riverview played softball against Maple. Beat them. 32-2. Then had a wiener roast. Monty, Dean & I furnished music for a very short dance. We came home with Dean.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
