1944-03-04 to 03-10

4              Sat.  Odds & ends this morn. Gave Wilma & Shirley lessons. Dad & the three girls went to town. I had a sleep, the did homework. Fern & Leila came home with them. They & Isabelle went to a party at Killians. I was invited, but was too sleepy. Had worked hard.

5              Sun. Slept in Late. Did homework, It stormed most of the day, Isabelle & I had a sleep. I was enjoying it so much but had to review Composition. Tried to study Chemistry, but it was hopeless. Bed about 10.

6              Mon. Mr. S brought us three kids to town. Cold and blustery, cleared up a bit tonight. I didn’t do any homework. Studied Chemistry. We got the second dose of inoculation after four.

7              Tues. I wrote Chemistry 1st thing this morn, then Composition after recess. The former was terrible!! Doris went down town after school. I did potatoes. We were having lunch this evening when Dean & Gordon came up. We made them some cold cocoa. Doris didn’t go skating with them. Bed at 10.30.

8              Wed. Wrote a Lit. test this afternoon. I made a hurried trip over to Coulters after four. Delia came in and visited us. Had an early supper. Doris went to the show with Dean. I went to Sorrells & kept Patsy. Bed at 10.40.

9              Thurs. We both went down town after four. I came home & had a sleep while Doris got supper. She had an accident with her drawer. She kept Patsy tonight. I studied H.Ec. till 10.10, then Charlie called for me to play for Carpet Bowlers dance at IOOF. Good dance. Back in bed about 2.05.

10           Fri. Wrote our H. Economics exam. Dad bummed a ride to town as car is broken. Doris & I went home with Bill Pierces. The folks went to a Red Cross Card Party at South Weyburn. I did my hair, & other odd jobs.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. She had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grade 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for CATP (Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
