This was our second visit to Dawson City on this trip. But we had also been here to celebrate a marquee birthday for Bev in the Year 2000. The vibe here is absolutely unique. Think Paris in the northern wilderness in 1902!
Bev’s Diary, June 8: Sunrise 3:57a, Sunset 12:37a (Dawson City YT). Back to Dawson City by noon and managed to rent a 1904 log cabin for the night. Washed the van, bought wine and groceries and just settled in. No Vacancy in Dawson tonight.

We washed the Dempster Highway off the van. We also discovered that we left tiny pieces of the van’s body on the Dempster and in the carwash!

Bev’s Diary, June 9: Sunrise 3:55a, Sunset 12:39a (Dawson City YT). Wonderful day spent in Dawson City — eating, exploring, and shopping. Back to enjoy the miners tent experience for the night. Early to bed early to rise.

Early morning lineup to cross the Yukon River to connect to the Top Of The World Highway.

Cliff jumper parachuting across the Yukon River.

We visited the Northwest Territories information booth both outbound and homebound. Outbound we got the best information we could on how to drive this highway. At that point, June 3, no tourists had yet completed the round-trip on the new highway to Tuk. We reported again on the return trip (as agreed). We advised that “there a a lot of tourists headed to Tuk, but no one there seems to be adjusting to the dramatic increase.” To which we received the response: “Yes, that’s what we keep telling Yellowknife, but they don’t listen!”

Bev’s Diary, June 10: Sunrise 4:31a, Sunset 11:28p (Whitehorse YT). Left at 6:30a and stopped to camp at 4:30p. Too long a day but enjoyable scenery along the way. Saw foxes and porcupines. Marsh Lake Campground.
Thus ends the third, of five segments of our 2018 trip to Alaska and the Arctic Ocean.
