(A Guide to Scanning and Presenting Old Photos)
We have been scanning and organizing old photos for about five years. We now have a digital inventory of about 50,000 images and have already constructed a significant portion of our website to present this material.
Where does “quilting” and “museum” fit with the hobby? To answer:
Museum
Our digital product does have many similarities to a physical museum.
The definition of “museum,” by The International Council of Museums is:
“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”
In fact, our museum at BoyleParkMedia.ca does function very close to this definition. (see footnote for an evaluation of our compatibility with the definition)
Quilt Making
The work looks very much like that of our quilting friends including:
- acquiring material,
- cutting it up,
- organizing a layout,
- stitching and assembling,
- all of this done simply for the pleasure of doing it (and some faint hope that someone else will enjoy what you create!)
Our latest project involves four boxes of slides and a “memory book.”
The memory book was created by my Mother-In-Law, Lorna Seafoot. The slides were taken by my Father-In-Law, Bud Seafoot, between 1966 and 1973.
