A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
14 Sun. It blew terribly in the night. I played the piano for about an hour this morn. We had dinner, & then shortly after Harry phoned to say he was going to town. We left about 2. John & Keith came too. Didn’t have any trouble. Isabelle & I went to Church & then to the Band Concert, this evening.
15 Mon. Worked hard & got Payroll out this morn. So Charlie could leave this aft for the Convention in Saskatoon. Keith brought his Dad in to go too, & he was in the Office several times. We had a lovely chat. Isabelle & I packed most of our things tonight, ready to move.
16 Tues. Men brought our blankets & grub in, so we had to get Norm to move us at noon in a hurry. Heck of a slow day at work. When we hit the room tonight, things looked pretty grim, but got it straightened around before 10.
17 Wed. I didn’t sleep the least bit well. Alone in the Office this morn, & the check up was terrible. Awful day. Storming & blowing. I scrubbed the floor, cleaned out drawers, etc. this aft. Pretty cold in the room. Bathed tonight, then Is. & I went to the Carol Service in the Legion. Very good.
18 Thurs. Didn’t sleep very well last night. Had my first lunch alone at noon. Is. took hers to School. We both stayed in this evening. Read. Rather chilly. Terribly cold out & blowing.
19 Fri. Lovely day. Charlie got back at noon. Is. finished school this morn, so had dinner ready when I got home. She went out home this aft, as the concert is tonight. I kept hoping maybe Keith would be in to meet the bus, but no such luck. Ate supper & spent evening by myself.
20 Sat. Isabelle didn’t come in until this aft. Keith & His Mom came to meet the train, so we came up to the room for Wilma’s skates, then left Mrs. B. at the station while we had dinner at the Commercial. Boyles & Mom went out early, so Dad waited & took us home. I washed my hair & set it this evening.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
