A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
9 Sun. I slept on the Studio Couch. We all went to Carmichael Church this morn. Beautiful Service, unveiling of a window (Memorial.) Talked to Mr. & Mrs. Lane. Keith & I went to Aunt Mena’s for the afternoon. Had another dinner. I talked everyone in to going to Carmichael again tonight. Sermon was on “For Better or for Worse.” Music lovely. Played more records. We stayed up until 2 again.

10 Mon. Keith & I went downtown & looked at Furniture in Eatons & Simpsons. Mom came up with Stutts, so we went to Aunt Menas again. Keith & I went to the Bible House. Got a lovely white Bible, & while the rest went to a show tonight, we went to the Trianon. It was wonderful, a lovely place. I wore my new dress. I am so much in love with Keith. We had a grand time.
11 Tues. Margaret, Keith & I went to Aunt Menas this morn. Then to the show at the Capitol at 12.15 where we met Eleanor & her sister. Saw “Gone With The Wind.” Very good. Out at 4. Graham & his mom met us. We had a wonderful chicken supper, then got Mom at Aunt Menas & left for home before 7. I came right out home.
12 Wed. Isabelle & I brought the car to town & I took it home at noon, then came out with the Sterlings at six. Mom & I talked all afternoon. Also sewed. I can’t find my skates. I made a chocolate cake for supper. Washed & set hair tonight.
13 Thurs. Harry B. brought the Sterling girls & us to town this morn. I thought I’d practice tonight, but when we got home the piano was cold. Just my luck. I have a relapse of the cold again tonight. Stayed in.
14 Fri. Mrs. Buchanan came home after supper tonight. I went to G.G.I.T. Leaders Meeting at Miss Bells. I am not a leader, but they are gong to call on me if needed. Home at 10 and set my hair, & took a bath after that.
15 Sat. Keith came in this aft. Marg & Gord met us at the Store & we all went out home for supper. Had music, played Finance, ping-pong, and ice-cream for lunch. Really a very nice time. Snowed all day. Keith stayed overnight.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
