A Week in Lorraine’s Diary
20 Sun. Uncle Syd & we girls drove to the Paper Mill at Thorold. Saw the “Weyburn” boat in Canal. Came home & ate, then all went to Vineland to Dave Bones for picnic. Picked cherries. Met Walkers, Woodworks & Crittendons among others. Ate a huge supper. Came home & Uncle Syd phoned Mom. We talked to her, over about 2,000 miles. She said Mr. Powers had quit so I feel quite badly about it.
21 Mon. Went to Toronto on the boat. Wonderful trip. Piano on upper deck so we played & sang most of the way. Met Frank Butters who took us through Royal York. Saw Marg & Stewart a few min, also Ev & Raymond. Came back in car & stopped at Crittendons. Talked & laughed. I sure get razzed. Had a lovely lunch. Home at 12.
22 Tues. Aunt Ilah called us at 12.15. Had dinner. Embroidered, talked had tea & fortunes told this aft. Mr. & Mrs. Chapman & Paul came this evening. Talked & sang. They are grand. Aunt Ilah gave us lunch.
23 Wed. Unc. took us to the bank & got us fixed up this morn, then Is. & I shopped till noon. Wilma & Beth went in the car. Rested this aft, then all except Uncle Syd, plus Beth’s girlfriend went on a picnic. Cooked bacon & eggs. Got Unc, saw Falls on the way home & sang again tonight. Have to leave tomorrow.
24 Thurs. Folks drove us to Hamilton & we got on the bus. Everyone has been perfect to us. Almost the end of a grand vacation. Good bus trip made all connection. McDowells from Griffin got on the bus at Chatham. What a surprise.
25 Fri. Heat was terrible today, but we kept on coming right until Midnight. Got the Bismarck & Had to stay, so go a double room with bath. Bed about 1.30, and glad of it. Rained hard in early morning.
26 Sat. Up at 10.30 & bus left at 12.15. Arrived at Portal at 7 and the folks were there to meet us. Gee we were glad to see them. Sask. is pretty nice after all. Drove to Estevan. Had supper. Flat tire so were delayed a little, but home about 12, and Keith was waiting. I asked him to stay overnight which he did. We gave everyone their souvenirs.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
