May 4-10, 1947

went cart-riding Sunday, May 4, 1947

We love “Cart-Riding” in 2021, it also happened with different locomotion in the 1940s.

4             Sun. A wonderful day, & we had a perfect time. Played ball, rode the bike, went cart-riding. I took the girls all to the School in the cart. So nice & warm out. We looked at snapshots. Made heaps of noise & ate like pigs. Those kids are sure cards. Had ice-cream & strawberries for supper. Miss Fahlman came over this evening. We had Dad singing. Had lunch & ginger ales. She left at 11. The end of a perfect day.

5             Mon. Mom brought all us kids into town. Wilmas Birthday. Had a cake last night. I had to go to the Oil from 2 to 4 & I just hated it. It is supposed to permanent. Makes me sick to think about it. Listened to the “Egg & I” on Lux. It was comical, then I went to the Fashion Show and variety Concert in the Legion, with Mrs. Stewart & Arline. Really quite good. Doris & I talked about it when we got home.

6             Tues. Gee am I happy! Don’t have to go to the Oil. Can breathe again. I could have jumped up & down when Wilf told me. He wasn’t at the Store this aft, is going to take his holiday a day at a time. Stayed in tonight. Wrote to Uncle Syd & broke the news that we are coming down.

7             Wed. Nice busy morning. Took my lesson but was short of breath. Didn’t feel well this aft, so took an aspirin & went into a deep sleep. Isabelle & I went to the Bowlers Banquet. Had a wonderful supper including homemade Ice-cream sundaes & cake & our team got 8th prize, flash lights for the men & Royal Albert creams & sugars. I am thrilled about it all.

8             Thurs. Keith came up to the Office this aft. Almost two weeks since I last saw him. He looks kind of peaked. Talked his Mom into staying in, & we had supper than he & I went to the show “Heartbeat” with Ginger Rogers. We then had grape pop & talked to Dot, Marge & Erma in the Co-op. Came up to the house sat in the car, talked until about 10.30. I couldn’t get to sleep until late.

9             Fri. Fairly good day at work. Really went to town tonight. Practiced a long time, washed things, got my diary caught up. Doris was getting ready for Regina for tomorrow morn. Had ginger ale before bed.

10           Sat. Mom went home with Stutts & we kids took the car home. Beautiful evening. I sewed the lace on my pillow slips, sat in the car and talked with Wilma awhile. Knit a little more on my glove.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
