April 20-26, 1947

I told Wilma all about our Love Affair. Wednesday, April 223, 1947

20           Sun. Horrid wind & cold today. Margaret & her Dad went to S.S. Keith Marg & I went to get the cows in then to Dows with some money. Had a nice ride. Decided to stay down for Church tonight, I enjoyed it very much. The people are all so friendly. Keith looked perfectly wonderful in his good suit, my favorite tie, white shirt & his hair was nice, as he washed it and I waved it this morn. We came up home & had a nice chat with the folks. He had to go to town for Archie, so went to town in at 1.15 (the old dear.)

21           Mon. Mr. Stutt brought us to town. I gave Doris some Yardley’s Cream & powder. Isabelle & I talked again tonight until after 9.30. Mostly about Keith & I. I sure enjoy discussing things with her.

22           Tues. Nobby brought a fishing pole up to the office to Is. from Mom, after school. Eleven at C.C.Y.M. tonight. Collegiate kids are all writing exams. I was on lunch committee. Had salmon sandwiches & pickles. Pretty good meeting.

23           Wed. Good morning. I rode out to Staffords corner with Celeste Fellner & Wilma got me. We tried on clothes etc., then Wilma & I went down to Ladies Aid at Stutts about 4.15. I rather enjoyed it. Did some knitting. Set my hair & bathed tonight. I told Wilma all about our Love Affair. Stutts were up & played cards with Mom & Dad.

24           Thurs. Annual meeting today. I was at the Legion all day, looking after the Register & passing out Literature. Show was held there tonight, of the Co-op Tour. Keith came just as we were leaving, so I went with him. We saw the film, then I had to be out at 9.15, so Keith went to the show. Dad & Isabelle came down & watched the bowling, then we went to the Dance. Just had one & went for lunch. It quit at 12.00. Mac was with Keith.

25           Fri. Rather sleepy this morn, but lay down awhile at noon, & felt pretty good this aft. Did a few odd things after school. Ross came home today. Mr. Stewarts Mother & Father are here. I went to bed at 8.15 & was asleep by 8.30. Archie came tonight.

26           Sat. Woke up at 7.30. Boy, what a sleep. Mom & girls were in town. So we went home at six. Played ball after supper, then Keith came about 8.30. I almost thought he wasn’t going to come, & sure would have been disappointed. We played Hearts (Mom & we kids.) Had coffee & doughnuts. It was after 3 when he left.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
