March 30 to April 5, 1947

I made an angel food, but the fire wasn’t right, so it didn’t cook as well as it might have. Friday, April 4, 1947

30           Sun. I went to bed about 11 last night, but the kids made so much noise, that I thought I would never get to sleep, my hair was nice this morn. We had the other Cantata at Church this morn. “Olivet to Calvary.” The folks came in (except Isabelle). We didn’t get out until 12.45. Lois Kyle was at our place when we got out home. Keith came up about 3. Is slept all day. We had a nice time. Keith left about 1.45.

31           Mon. We bowled late against Walter’s Wits. Lost the 1st game by 9 pins, & won the other three. I had my high game of the season, my last one which was 221. Gee, was I thrilled. Dad brought me to town. Isabelle is sick out home.

Apr 1     Tues. I was so tired today. I could hardly stand up. Beautiful day. Isabelle is still out home. I went to bed at 8 o’clock tonight. Feel another cold (relapse) coming on.

2             Wed. Terribly busy all morn. People paying accounts. Feel really miserable. Sure have a cold coming on. Had my lesson, lay down for awhile, and packed things, wrote in diary etc. Isabelle came in.

3             Thurs. Didn’t know whether to go home or not, as roads are so bad, but finally Doris, Isabelle & I all did, as Dad came in to get the car. I stamped some pillowcases, & so on tonight. Nice to have the whole family home again, other than on a Sunday.

4             Good Fri. Dad, Mom & Isabelle painted the front room. I made an angel food, but the fire wasn’t right, so it didn’t cook as well as it might have. Did some knitting, helped wash & wax floor. Set my hair. Keith phoned me up this afternoon. Wilma & I talked in bed. Went to sleep early.

5             Sat. Dad brought us back to town. Is worked too. Had a pleasant surprise, as Keith came to town late this afternoon. He Is & I went to the first show “Margie” (Jeanne Crain), then out home afterwards. Had lunch. Keith & I lay on the chesterfield, and told one another about when we were kids. He is so sweet to me. Gave me a lovely card & nylons for Easter.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
