Turned into a terrible blizzard by noon. Thursday, February 6, 1947

2             Sun. I didn’t go to Church. Was real tired, but used my cold for an excuse. Slept until noon. Keith came about 2. We worked at Crossword puzzles most of the afternoon. Doris & we kids took pictures this evening. Sure hope they turn out O.K. Terrible blizzard. No Church tonight.

3             Mon. Doris had the girls over, in the front room, so they gabbed. Keith came, & he & Is. & I played Authors & Hearts in the dining room. While Arline & Mr. Stewart played crib in the kitchen. We had postum, sands, pickles & cookies for lunch. Had a lot of fun. Keith stayed until 1.45 after the rest had gone to bed we talked about a lot of things. I do think a lot of him. Terrible all day. I ate dinner at the store. Blizzarding.

4             Tues. Wilf is away this week, so Grace & I are running the Office ourselves. Didn’t check the tills off last night, so didn’t come to work until nine. Had the laziest day at work in History. Absolutely nothing to do. Keith & I talked to Is. in the kitchen tonight about tennis, farming etc. Finally went to Beatons to see Audrey. She is sure comical. Played piano a bit, had lunch. Home at 11. Bed at 2 again, but I think it is worth it.

5             Wed. Terrible busy all morn. Took my lesson & set my hair. Ruth & Mrs. Stutt were up to get Ruth’s bag. Lay down for an hour, but couldn’t sleep. Keith came up after 3.30 to say he was flying home, but didn’t go so phoned at 5.30 again. The old dear. Isabelle talked to me a long time after school while I did washing. We talked about Keith & I. She thinks we would make a pretty good couple. I bowled early. We got 4 points. Met Stutts (Harms), Doris & Is. at Theatre & we all had lunch. Keith came down & met them too.

6             Thurs. Blowing a bit this morn. Turned into a terrible blizzard by noon. Schools, Churches etc. have all been closed on account of fuel shortage. Is. Came down to the store. I stayed down for lunch, no Choir Practice tonight. Weather is terrible. Keith, Is, & I played Rummy in the front room. Had postum & Mom’s Valentine Cookies.

7             Fri. Didn’t go to work as the blizzard was terrible. Went back to bed from 7.30 to 10.30. Did my ironing, Cleaned the Room, Bathed, practiced nearly an hour before dinner. Slept from 2 until 5. Storm didn’t let up a bit. Keith came up, & he, Mr. Stewart & us kids played Hearts. Mrs. Stewart & Arline got lunch for us. Keith & I talked until quite late about marriage.

8             Sat. Very quiet at the store. Keith, Isabelle, Dot & I all went to the show at 7 “The Time, The Place, The Girl,” Dennis Morgan, Jack Carson in technicolor. Really good. We then met Irma & all went up to their place. Played a new kind of Rummy & had lunch. Got home about one. Got home about one. Didn’t get to bed until after 3.30.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
