“It is very frosty..“ Monday, November 25, 1946
24 Sun. I made an Angel Food this morn. I turned out very well. We girls sang Carols this aft. I nearly stared a hole in the window watching for Keith, but he never came. I even hoped this evening, but all to no avail. Gee I miss him. What a weekend. I wish I knew whether is for me or not. My mind is so unsettled. I am just trusting that God will tell me. Wilma talked with us awhile this evening, then we were in bed before ten.

25 Mon. Mr. Stutt brought us to town this morn. The roads are very heavy, but we got through O.K. It is very frosty. I got along O.K. today. Heard that Jack Clapperton is married. I wonder who will be next. We bowled South Weyburn early tonight. Got two points. Isabelle & I saw the show “Till We Meet Again,” with Dorothy McQuire. Pretty good.
26 Tues. Cold again today. Started some Stencil Work again. Quite interesting. Did O.K. at the Oil Dept. went up & saw Gord & Marg at noon & they said they will see Keith tonight about next Sunday, so I feel better about it. C.C.Y.M. tonight. Karen Perison is down. Small attendance, but we had a swell time & swell meeting. She spoke to us.
27 Wed. Warmer. I’m dead tired, but had a good morning at work. Took a lesson & dozed awhile this aft. A letter from Aunt Ellen stated that she gets up twice a day, even stood on her feet for a min. Might be home for Christmas. Doris is buzzing around getting ready to leave tomorrow.
28 Thurs. Doris left on train for Brandon this morn for big formal tonight. I went back to sleep didn’t waken until 8 o’clock. Boy did I hurry. Made it though. Isabelle slept with me tonight. I set my hair. It certainly doesn’t stay in curl long now.
29 Fri. Isabelle & I went to the show “Smokey” with Fred MacMurray starring, in technicolor. It was real good. Got a ride home with Mr. Stewart & Arline. I took a bubble bath which felt swell, then Is. & I had cocoa before going to bed. I couldn’t sleep so took aspirin at 11.30.
30 Sat. Keith came down to the Coffee Bar. I was so pleased to see him. So Dad took the car home, & we kids all went home with Keith. He stayed at our place over night. We made fudge candy with nuts in it, which was swell. Played cards awhile then the rest went to bed. We occupied the Chesterfield until about 1.30. I can’t quite decide my feelings for him. He gave me the most wonderful birthday kiss plus several others, then a small package. It is a darling pair of heart shaped earrings, with diamonds in them. They are lovely.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
