October 27 to November 2, 1946

Premier Douglas was in the Office Thursday, October 31, 1946

27           Sun. I was sleepy this morn. But was up shortly after 9.30. Snowed this morn. Wilma & I lay down, but I didn’t sleep. Mom & I made me a costume. David is so sweet. He was getting accustomed to me by tonight, & is actually sweet on me. I practiced singing & piano for a good hour after supper. We three girls talked in the bedroom for quite awhile, then I couldn’t get to sleep until after eleven.

28           Mon. Dad brought us to town this morn. We left early, so had plenty of time. I wasn’t very busy all day. Doris & I both washed & set our hair tonight. Alice came after 8 & practiced with Isabelle & I for Wednesday night. Doris & I talked for ages after we went to bed, about sex, our respective boy friends, etc.

29           Tues. Still not very busy today. Went to C.C.Y.M. tonight. Audrey Ireland came over & went with  us. We had a fairly good meeting, Delbert’s Convention Report, & played games for Halloween Social. Nobody brought lunch, so we didn’t have any.

30           Wed. Was kept busy this morn. Didn’t take a singing lesson as my throat was husky & I was so tired. Slept off & On for a couple of hours. Bathed & went bowling at 7.15. We won 4 points. My second game was 169. Keith met me down there & we went to Co-op social at I.O.O.F. Mom & Dad & Stutts were there. Isabelle & I sang “Cupids in the Briny” as uncore (sic) after “Light of the Silvery Moon.” Had a good time. Dance after social. Keith stayed for about 1 1/4 hrs. I just hated to see him go. He asked me what I wanted for my birthday.

31           Thurs. Premier Douglas was in the Office this morn. Was I thrilled. I was real busy & didn’t feel too terribly sleepy. Was talking to Dad tonight as it is his birthday. When I got my cheque cashed & my bills all paid, I have 85 cents to live on for two weeks. Great life if you don’t weaken.

Nov 1    Fri. Keith was up to the Office this morn. Was quite busy all day. Made it interesting. Time didn’t drag so much. Doris went to the show. I had a very enjoyable evening doing cross-stitch, reading, etc. Didn’t even set my hair. Is. & I talked.

2             Sat. Felt good for Sat. Had apple for lunch this aft & chocolate cake which Jim Ottley donated. Glad work went well. Keith is away to Regina. As of yesterday. So he wasn’t here tonight. Missed him. Wilma & I had a gab session while I set my hair, bathed & put everything in good order. Doris came up & stayed tonight, as her Grandparents are down there. Were to bed by 10.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
