“He sure gave me a real kiss tonight.“ Saturday, August 3, 1946
28 Sun. Roy, Isabelle, Wilma & I went to Church in the Baptist Church. Reg Wilson preached. Not Bad. Had some music this aft, made some ice-cream, & I tried to sleep but couldn’t. Very hot all day. We kids fooled around a bit tonight. Got to sleep about eleven.
29 Mon. Heat was terrific. Isabelle & I went to town to work. Wilma & Roy left on bus. I took off a balance today of six days work & it was a sight balance though Wilf’s figures were wrong, & I checked all day before he found it. Doris & Geordie occupied front room. i washed set my hair & did other odd jobs. Bed by 11.30 but heat was so intense we couldn’t sleep.
30 Tues. Nearly suffocated again today. Office is terrible. Doris canned cherries tonight. Isabelle & I went to the show “So Goes My Love” with Myrna Loy & Alan Ladd. We both liked it very much. Made lemonade & had it on veranda when we came home.
31 Wed. Couldn’t get my work all done this morn. Took my lesson after dinner. Came home & lay down but never went sound to sleep. Got up and did dishes and got supper. Went back to work at 7 and worked til nine. Took off a balance, but no luck. Roy was up talking to me awhile. Doris is getting ready to go to __ Perry’s dance when I got home. I couldn’t get to sleep of the heat.
Aug 1 Thurs. Got a balance at noon. Worked like everything but couldn’t see what I had done. Stayed home tonight. Cleaned the bathroom & mopped floors & dusted. Mrs. Richards just about drove us crazy at the office arguing her acct.
2 Fri. What a day! Everyone thinks his bill is too high. Mrs. Richard was up again. Still isn’t convinced. Still don’t know which end I’m standing on. I made some Chinese Chews tonight. Kelly Andrews came over, so she, Doris & I had lemonade & cookies. I set all my hair, did my nails, & took a bath.

3 Sat. Worked hard all day. Doris went home this aft. I still hadn’t heard from Keith at suppertime but cleaned up anyway. He came to the office before nine & made a date. I met him after work. We drove around awhile, then went to the Legion Dance. Met Marg & Gord, so we all came up to the house & I made lunch for the kids. Played piano. Got out home before two, & got talking, so we hated to break it up. He sure gave me a real kiss tonight. Talked in the house for awhile.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
