December 9-15, 1945

I’ve never seen so many nuts in my life. Thursday, December 13, 1945

9              Sun. Wrapped presents all afternoon. Got them tied in brown paper even. Had a real good supper. Went to bed at 8 o’clock & to sleep right away.

10           Mon. Mr. Stutt brought us to town. Very cold! If I hadn’t been worrying about our coupons, I would have had a good day. Got home at 6.30 & left for the Farmers Hockey Games. C.C.Y.M. played Talmage. Score 1-0 for latter. Really very thrilling to watch. Had a hot dog. Came home & worked.

11           Tues. Accomplished quite a bit today. Was rather tired, but didn’t have anything particular to do tonight so offered to help Mr. Powers with his work. Got the Grand Bend Telephone Statements all ready for mailing. Finished about ten.

12           Wed. Had a terrific amount of work this morn, so Ivy helped me, & we just barely got it done. Tried to sleep this aft after doing my hair, but just rolled & tossed. Bowled against the Dodgers tonight. Won three points. I had three beautiful games: 100, 149 and 153.

13           Thurs. Went back to work again tonight to help the kids downstairs pack nuts. Charlie & Ivy were there too. Had a lot of fun, & I’ve never seen so many nuts in my life. Worked for three hours.

14           Fri. Terribly busy today. Hardly had a chance to work on my balance. So went back to work tonight. Kids downstairs were bagging candy. Kept bringing it up to the office. I finally got a balance & caught up a little of my other work. Home at 10.30. Kids downstairs still working.

15           Sat. Terrific day. We sold candy in the office. Ivy & I did this morn, but this aft she had to work at the till, so I was alone most of the time. Didn’t get hardly any of my work done. Oodles of it. Finished my knitting at home tonight. Made a dolly dress & bathed before going to bed at 12.30.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
