Kiss Me Goodnight Sargeant Major

28           Sun. Mrs. Stewart called me at 10 o’clock. I went to Church, met Mom & the girls. We heard Mr. (Dr.) Glover speak. He certainly was wonderful. Came back to Stewarts & heard the end of Mr. S’s sermon on the radio. Went home. Linda & Elmer came up at 3.30. Dad was away getting the cattle & got home at suppertime. Sang awhile, then talked. They didn’t leave til 12.20.

29           Mon. Mom brought us in to town. Isabelle has a terrific cold. Weather also cold. Washed & set my hair & fixed my hat for the Halloween party. After finishing odd jobs, were in bed about ten to eleven.

30           Tues. Snowed last night. Cold & windy. Isabelle & I went Directly to the church Pot Luck supper from work. It was terrific. So crowded. Ate with a big spoon fork in a corner, ran home right after, dressed for C.C.Y.M. Halloween Party. Had a swell time there. Wonderful lunch & social committee sure did their duty. Our group won the Treasure Hunt.

31           Wed. Checked the bills this morn. Went back to work this aft. Checked every thing day by day, but am still out 10 cents. Left at 5 o’clock. Came home & bathed, washed stockings before supper. Cleaned the room this evening & did some mending. Doris wrote letters and so on. Went to bed before eleven.

Nov 1    Thurs. Couldn’t get a balance today, so came back to work tonight until nearly eleven. Mr. Powers came about 9.30 and worked until just before I left. I walked home. Pretty cold evening.

2              Friday. Found that my balance was correct last night, only I didn’t know it. Ivy transferred all my accounts for me, which helped tremendously as I typed the envelopes. Got out all the statements, except miscellaneous. Isabelle went to Commencement tonight. Dad & Wilma were in to it. Premier Douglas spoke. We bowled against Traveller’s Grill, & won 3 points. We were all much better than the former week.

3              Sat. Worked like the dickens all day. Ivy did the rest of the statements for me. Just finished before 6.15. Stores closed at 6.30. Mom & Wilma & Shirley were in. Got home before 8. Fixed clothes washed them, etc.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
