14           Sunday. Dad, Isabelle & Mr. Stutt went fishing this morn. We made out an Eatons Order for some Christmas things. Went to Church this aft. Very few there. Though the men were there we went to call on McGugans, & stayed for supper much against my will but Mrs. M. expected us to. We three girls cleaned out trunks & stuff for Clothes Europe. Thought up some Halloween costumes.

15           Mon. A lovely day. Mr. Stutt brought us kids to town. Stewarts went to Regina today. I worked all evening on a Chapter of “Case for Socialism” for tomorrow night.

16           Tues. Beautiful day. I took my lunch hour at 11.30, went to Dr. Moore & had a decay and a broken tooth filled. Finished at 12.10. Didn’t have any dinner, but went out for pie this afternoon. C.C.Y.M. tonight. Had a lot of business & kids nom(inated) me as one of the Delegates for Saskatoon Convention. Home at 11.20.

“Smile The While You Kiss Me Sad Adieu”

17           Wed. Russ Morgan gave me a letter this morn, & I had a lot of other typing to do, so couldn’t get my work all done. Went right back after dinner, did some coupons then C.C.Y.M. work. Mr. Sorrell informed me that we bowl tonight. I thought it was Friday so had to round up a sub. Isabelle & I went out home with the Sterling girls. Our Family all went to Maple Fowl Supper. Is. & I sang “Harvest Moon” & “Prayer Meeting Time In The Hollow”. I stayed out home over night. Program was poor.

18           Thurs. Came to town with Killians. Rained all night last night, so roads were greasy & one car was right across it, therefore we had to wait til Giroux’s pulled it off. I was 20 minutes late for work. Accomplished quite a bit today. Late getting supper over with. I did minutes & C.C.Y.M. work all evening. Bed about 10.45.

19           Fri. Frosty this morn, but turned out nice. I was fairly busy all day. Doris & I went down & bowled before the League started. Ken Springer kept the score the first one, and bowled with us the second. I bowled 132, and 103. Lost both games. No ice-cream , so we didn’t eat. Came home & did some of our work.

20           Saturday. Fairly cool. All I did this morn were the coupons and the Petty Cash. Had a pretty good afternoon & evening. Nearly ten when we got out. Mom, girls, waiting. Bed shortly after 11.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
