Performance #1 Its Just A Little Street Where Old Friends Meet

2              Sun. I woke up at 6.15, and got up at seven, went to Regina on the bus. Sat with Jane Young, Mr. Masig’s student. Roy met me at the bus, we went right to Aunt Mena’s. Saw them for a few min. then went to Roy’s at 12. Uncle Allan got home at 12.30 & played with Roy (music.) I had dinner there, & then went to the hospital with them at two. Stayed til a little after four. Uncle, Roy & David went to the bus with me, we had a lunch then left for home. Bus was packed, & terrifically hot. Stood a while & let a lady have my seat.

3              Mon. A new boarder in here today. Patricia Wilson from Tribune. I got up at about 9.30. Got to work at ten. I had to work, as I didn’t get a balance on Sat. I was highly pleased when Mr. Powers immediately gave me dictation and I didn’t get it done til 12.40. Came home then for lunch. Erial came this aft to do typing for Mr. Stewart, we were at work til 6.45. Boy, am I tired, and no balance yet.

4              Tues. Mom brought the girls into town. Robert was with her. Wind & dust were terrific. Just about went crazy trying to balance. Ivy spotted it this afternoon. I sure worked hard. I was on lunch committee tonight at C.C.Y.M. The meeting was swell. Wilbur & Will were the only two present on the committee. They gave Isabelle & I a ride home after dishes.

5              Wed. Worked like the dickens on statements, etc. Came home tired tonight, washed my hair, and did various other things. We fooled around a bit. Finally got to bed in fairly decent time.

6              Thurs. Got everything well on the road to recovery at the office (pretty well caught up) and feel much better about the whole thing. Wasted a lot of time at supper tonight. Doris, Isabelle & I went down & bowled three games. Each won one. The scores of the last one were terrific.

7              Fri. Very nice day. Did quite a bit of typing this morn. Went downtown early after dinner, and did some window shopping. Also collected some money. Talked to Mrs. McGugan a few min. Mom was in, so I took her for & Bizmarcks. Had a nice supper hour tonight. Just the four of us. Very jovial. Took a bath & stuff, tonight.

8              Sat. Fairly warm. When my work was completed I had Ivy show me how to do some of hers, as I will have to next week. Doris was up to the office & did a little typing. Didn’t get off work til ten. It had rained. Isabelle, Wilma & Mrs S. had the car in so we went right out. I stopped at McGugans for the night. Met and slept with Pearl Williams.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
