July 29 to Aug 4, 1945

got a balance. The first one. I have had by myself.” Wednesday, August 1, 1945

29           Sun. S.S. This morn at 11, and no church. Dad was away with the car, so we went up with Sterlings. Isabelle rode the bike, and I rode it from there to McGugans. Monty, Bill, & Talbot were in the yard. Pert asked me in. He certainly is a gentleman. I took up the Hymn Book. Rode back home on the bike. We went to Jack Hawtons for supper. Had a nice time. Home fairly early. Played catch.

30           Mon. Isabelle brought us to town. I worked fairly hard all day. Wilma came to town & stayed with us. Ross Barker came up tonight and sold me Co-op Insurance. Fooled around awhile. Wilma & I went & got bismarks.

31           Tues. Worked on a balance all day. Didn’t get anywhere. Just about crazy. Went back to work at 7.30, & worked until after 11. Mr. Powers was there for quite awhile. When I got everything figured out. I am only out 91 cents.

Aug 1     Wed. Still didn’t get a balance this morn. Got home about 1 for dinner. Went back at 2, and worked til 5.15. Ivy was there all afternoon. I went back at 7.30, and at 10 o’clock, got a balance. The first one. I have had by myself. Boy! Am I happy.

2              Thurs. The kids came up here, & we had an Executive Meeting. It was kind of fun. We kids walked down town afterwards to bowl, but couldn’t get an alley, so had a banana split. Paid 34 cents for each of them. Bed about 11.

3              Friday. Worked like the dickens, but still didn’t get my work quite caught up. Gobbled our Hamburger & tom. in a hurry for supper, then Wilma, Doris & I went to the first show. “Here Come the Waves” with Betty Hutton & Bing Crosby. I took a bath when we got home & it rained hard and hailed a bit in here.

4              Sat. Got a few dividends done today. Dad came up to see me tonight for a few minutes. I got Wilma after work, & we went to the bowling alley, where we met Doris, Evelyn & Williard & bowled. Mom, Dad & Isabelle came in later & Isabelle played with us the second game. Bed at 12.45.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …

For more information on BCATP see a blog site dedicated to “Paying homage to those who stayed behind to train those who fought overseas.
