“Fair!!! Mom took Isabelle & I to town this morn. We took Isabelle’s exhibits to the hall“ Monday, July 10, 1944
8 Sat. Did cleaning etc. then stitched my apron for the fair. Mom, Isabelle & Wilma went to town this morning. Neil & Dean came down this evening. We talked, etc. Then had music. Mom got us lunch, then she & Dad went to bed. We fooled around, & then the kids left at 1 o’clock.
9 Sun. Dad, Isabelle, Shirley & I went to Stutt’s in the car to collect Isabelle’s sheaves for the fair. We came back, Mom & I made ice-cream while Wilma got lunch. Mom & we girls went to S.S. & Church, after which Shirley, Isabelle & I went home with McGugans, while mom & Wilma came home to get Dad & the ice-cream. We had strawberries & Ice-cream for supper. Nice time. Dean & I had a real discussion on music. Had a little sing song, came home around 8.30
10 Mon. Fair!!! Mom took Isabelle & I to town this morn. We took Isabelle’s exhibits to the hall, then went to the Hostess Club to Farm Girls Camp. Isabelle, Isabelle S. & I had meals at the United Church. Did judging this afternoon. I played for a sing song at supper time. We all went on the Grandstand to-night. Isabelle & I met Neil after, who took us on rides, bought lunch etc. We went back at eleven thirty & went to bed. Slept shortly after twelve.
11 Tues. Up at six. Saw a show under the grandstand after breakfast, then looked at exhibits – went to the theatre after dinner. Saw Olivia De Havilland in “Government Girl.” It was good. Went on the grandstand tonight. Met the folks. Home shortly after eleven.
12 Wed. Sleepy. Mother did the washing. I did other work. Mrs. F. came over & got Isabelle. Shirley went back to Audrey’s with them. We packed boxes for the boys this afternoon. Bob Coulter’s were in to get the quilting frames. Mr. S. hurt his back, so Dad milked for him tonight. We went too.
13 Thurs. Did a little bit of everything. Got clothes ready etc. to go to Regina tomorrow. Wilma & I were in at Sterling’s, also called at Stutt’s. Mom & Dad went down there & did the chores, but I stayed home, did hair, bathed, & went to bed.
14 Fri. Mom & Wilma took me to town to meet the 8.20 bus for Regina. It was late. We came as far as Yellow Grass then had to wait for the other bus to pick us up. Got to Aunt Ellen’s at noon. Had dinner late. She made cookies while we talked. Talked til about midnight tonight. Couldn’t go to the show, as the children wouldn’t go to sleep.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
Gee. I wonder what fooling around involved in 1944!!
