When we first moved to Boyle Park in 1996 the neighbours across the road were Mr and Mrs Struc. They lived in the city but he was a hobby farmer and they were frequently out during the summer. On an early visit to meet them, we also met his 1953 John Deere MT and we fell in love with it – and I let him know it. It reminded me so much of the tractor that I had grown up with (see Part 1 of this Post).
One day, during that fall, Mrs Struc came roaring up our laneway to see if we could help because their combine was on fire and Mr Struc had been burned. We grabbed our fire extinguisher and hurried back to successfully extinguish the fire. Mrs Struc than took Mr Struc to the hospital.
When they arrived back the next spring, they announced that they would be selling out and Mr Struc dropped by to ask if he could store his tractor at our place. He wanted to do this because he has having the auction sale the following weekend. He explained that he didn’t want the tractor to be sold and needed to make sure it was out-of-site and out-of-mind during the auction.
We were away the next weekend, but when we came home, here was the John Deere sitting behind our barn. When Mr Struc came to pick it up he asked if I would like to buy it. It assured him that I would love to, but also assured him that there was no way that we could afford to pay even a fraction of what it was worth.
A few months later, Mr Struc again arrived at our door because someone was about to make an offer for the farm. He didn’t want the tractor sitting there, because “the buyer would just make an offer that included the tractor – and I don’t want that.” He again offered the John Deere to us and we declined again.
Again we were away for the weekend, and again we came home to find the tractor parked behind our barn. This time when he came to pick it up, he asked again how much we would offer him. I reluctantly and with some embarrassment offered about ½ of what I believed it was worth. He seemed absolutely delighted to accept the offer.
So the John Deere moved from the back of the barn into its own garage at Boyle Park! And it delighted four generations since then!!
