May 13-19, 1944

Wed, May 17 Isabelle has to ride Stubby home as Dad rode him in to lead the team.

13           Sat. Did the work all morn. Mom sewed. I gave Leila, Wilma & Shirley, lessons. Had a 1 1/2 hour sleep this afternoon. We all went to town tonight. Left Isabelle off at McGugans. She went to the show with Neil. Mom & we girls went to see James Cagney in Johnny Come Lately. It was real good.

14           Sun. A grand & very hot day. We had a lovely church service. There were forty there, including Neil and Dean. I was down to Stutts on bike this morn. Also studied 1 1/2 hrs. Myrna & we three girls went to Freemans after church to ask Elton for supper. Russ was there & he told us stories for 3/4 of an hour, we finally got away. The left around 8. It stormed tonight.

15           Mon. Mr. Stutt brought us as far as McGugans, then we came in with Dean. Went down town after four. Went down tonight and got the mail. Doris phoned home. We were in bed shortly after ten.

16           Tues. Wrote a test in Hamlet this afternoon. Mom was here when we got home from school. I went down town with her, bought a copy of the Coll. Photo & she got me a pair of shoes. Willard & Ernie came up about 8. Fooled around here til 9.30. Then we made toasted meat sandwiches after which they got banana splits for us at the Commercial. Also for themselves. Good. They walked us home. Bed at 11.40

17           Wed. Mom, Isabelle & Shirley were up here before we went to school. Is. has to ride Stubby home as Dad rode him in to lead the team. Miss Blakley got word last period to go to Saskatoon as her sister is _____. We called on Uncle Tom after supper as he is sick in bed. We kept Patsy tonight while they went to the show. I started a letter to Bert.

18           Thurs. Rained early this morn, & again this afternoon. Doris went down town after school, while I got supper. Did my hair afterward, & read papers. Went to Sorrells this evening. Was raining when we came home.

19           Fri. We went home with Dean after four & early. Chewed hard chocolate bars. Shower at the school tonight for Sidloski’s. Grand crowd. Volunteer music. Charlie played before supper. Lunch followed the shower which was grand. The kids got oodles of things. Had community singing. Went over swell. Dean, Neil, Dad & I contributed music after supper. Quit at 1.45.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
