Lorraine’s Diary Entry for Sunday, April 23, 1944: 23 Sun. The girls were outside quite a bit. I wrote an essay this morn for Miss Cardwell. Took a few pictures. Tried desperately to study Literature, but Miss Farrell came over about 3.30, so I couldn’t do it. The girls had made ice-cream. Miss F. Stayed for supper. Got word today that Frank McGugan was killed on Friday. I feel wretched tonight. Didn’t get to bed til after 10.
From Aunt Wilma: Frank was the eldest of the 4 McGugan boys. He was a pilot, gunned down in the second WW. He was the only one that did not survive. Pilot was last to evacuate. The whole community was devastated, as they always were when any sadness occurred. I was too young to know Frank. Knew all the other boys.

Winnifred Wollett, From Joan Allan 20201228
Winnifred was deployed, from her home in the East, to the Weyburn area during the war. Winnifred is Nora (Brown) Wollett’s daughter. Nora is sister to Ilah (Brown) Bullis. Winnifred had a brother Harry who was also deployed (Navy) and suffered a war related hearing injury.

Lorraine’s Diary Entry for Tuesday, May 8, 1945: 8 Tues. Victory in Europe = VE Day. Up at 6.30. Said good bye to Ross & Arline, who left on the train. Heard Mr. Churchill & Truman speak on radio. Went to church at 10.30. Mom & girls were in. They came up & had lunch at the house. Stewarts were away. Heard the King speak, went downtown to see the parade, then attended service in the Legion. I came out home as we have a holiday tomorrow.

Lorraine’s Diary Entry for Monday, April 22, 1946:22 Mon. Isabelle is 17 today. Mr. Stutt took us to town. Isabelle went along too. Doug Moore came in for me. I went to Colgate to play for their Wedding Dance. Real nice time & crowd. Music and others had lunch at Coulters. I had four dances after supper. One with Keith Boyle. Moores brought a carload back.

Lorraine’s Diary Entry for Wednesday, June 12, 1946: 12 Wed. Keith Boyle from Colgate came to the Office & asked me for a date to Sports Day & Dance this aft & evening. We left right after my lesson. Stopped in at home for a few mins. Watched softball & bought supper at stand, then went out to Boyles. They have a grand place. Margaret went to the dance with us. I had a swell time. Had lunch in car. Keith got quite spoony. Can’t say that I minded!!! Back to town at three. Was really quite thrilled about the whole thing.

Lorraine’s Diary Entry for Saturday, January 25, 1947: 25 Sat. Keith came to town about noon. Gee, I was sure tickled to see him. We went to the show again with Marg & Gord then they went curling & we went up to their suite. Got home at 2, but I brought him in & gave him his Birthday Present, so it was 3 when I got to bed. Keith proposed to me tonight. I didn’t give him an answer. Don’t think I am ready to be married yet, but was really thrilled.

Lorraine’s Diary Entry for Saturday, August 16, 1947: 16 Sat. I worked tonight. Is. helped me. The whole gang of kids went bowling (8 of us) including Doris & Keith. Took an hour for the second game as we just had one alley, but fun anyway. Keith gave me the most beautiful diamond as soon as we got home. I am very thrilled & happy. We ate 4 bricks of ice-cream for lunch. Mary & I went home with Keith. His Mom & Dad were awake, so we showed then the ring.

1948
Lorraine’s Diary Entry for Tuesday, November 16, 1948: 16 Tues. Just usual work this morn. Dad came down and helped Keith finish shingling our house this aft. Mother & I went to the Bacon-Fotheringham Wedding at 4. I was very lovely. I came home alone & got supper for my husband & Father. Mother stayed for Lodge but didn’t wait for it. Home shortly after supper.

1949
When Keith and Lorraine were married in June 1948 they moved in with Mossie and Charlie while they built their own house on the same farm. Aunt Wilma indicates that the construction started right after the wedding and that they moved in around their first anniversary.
In the Summer of ’49 Cheryl was everyone’s favourite niece!
